Orel

Oreo

Greetings Fans!

Can you believe it is December already? It certainly doesn’t feel like it with temperatures in the mid, to high, seventies. We would love some cooler temps, but hey, it’s Louisiana.

OREO: I am heartbroken to report we lost our sweet, beautiful, boy, Oreo, on November 18th. Oreo’s death has hit me particularly hard. We love them all, but he and I had a special bond.

Oreo was a gorgeous, long-haired, tuxedo cat, that one of my neighbors deserted back last December. He was wandering the neighborhood confused, lonely, and very hungry. When I had seen him at the home he had been living before he was cruelly deserted, he would never come near me. He was very skittish and shy. After about a month he started meowing and coming closer to me. I put food out for him, and he began to trust me. Then he started coming to me and got much more comfortable. I took him into the sanctuary. We took him to the vet for a checkup and he tested positive for FIV, so he lived with us and flourished.

He fought hard. His body just could not fight back. He died as a result of Cariogenic Pulmonary Edema.

I miss that little bugger.

FRANK: Frank, the Flame Point Siamese kitten, has been adopted. I procrastinated on getting him up to PetSmart for adoption. Well, there was a lady who had to put her 16-year-old cat to sleep due to kidney failure and she was looking for a white cat. She met Frank and the rest is history. I hope they have a wonderful life together. I cannot wait for updates.

Frank

THEO: Theo (Pronounced Tayo like Theo Van Gosh), is a little Siamese kitten that Caddo Parish Animal Services (CPAS) asked if a rescue could help. I couldn’t stand the video they posted of this 1.8-pound kitten crying. They thought he only had tail damage, but he ended up having a fractured pelvis, femoral head, and the tail was damaged as well. Dr. Daville at Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic did his surgery. It’s a pretty scary thing to see such a tiny kitten have the femoral head, that ball joint at the hip, be removed, as well as much of the tail be amputated. He receives laser treatment twice a week. He is up to 2.8 pounds. He wants to run and play like any kitten, but his pelvic fracture needs to heal more first. He looks a lot like Grumpy Cat. He’s a pistol. His surgery cost us around $1800. But he is doing well. When he gets cleared from the vet, he will be placed up for adoption.

PRESCRIPTION DIETS: We currently have nine cats on special urinary diets, as well as three cats, on special digestive diets. These are either purchased at the veterinarian clinic, or another authorized seller with a prescription. These are quite expensive. A case of 24 cans is $50+ and the bags of dry formula is $60 per bag. One seven-pound bag of another diet is $45. This is very tough on our bank account, but it’s cheaper than serious medical issues requiring expensive vet care. This is just another reason we need your help. We hope you can help with your donation.

NEW CAT BUILDING: The deck has been built and it looks great. We came in about $200 less than planned, which is good because now we have the enclosure to build. Our builder has contracted every year to hang Christmas lights for certain businesses, so we haven’t started that part yet. Vernon will do so this week. The cats are looking forward to it so they will get to enjoy being outside on a porch, but safe from predators. Nothing can get in, and nothing can get out. They will be safe from harm but enjoy watching nature. The next phase is looking to come in at around $3000. Hopefully, it will come in much less. Vernon is the fairest contractor we have ever used. His work is great.

SPONSORSHIP:  Would you consider sponsoring a cat? This is a simple way you can help. Sponsorship is a very important way to help our animals. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for. Please consider sponsoring one of our animals.  The cats really need you.

Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.

You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

The recent vet issues with Oreo, Theo, and several other cats requiring hospitalization, has taken quite a toll on us. It’s par for the course, but this was difficult. We have paid over $3000 in vet bills the past month.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.

CRITICAL NEEDS: Vet care is always a primary need. Scoopable cat litter, preferable unscented, but we will take any. We feed Friskies or Fancy Feast canned pate, but we have chosen to change to Purina Naturals for our dry food. We are trying to get our cats on an even better diet. We do have several cats on an expensive urinary tract formula that we have to get at the vet. We go through a tremendous amount of cat litter. If you can help with a monetary donation, please do. We really hope you can help us in this area.

AMAZON WISH LIST: We have updated our Amazon wish list, we have added the Seresto flea collars, and some other much needed food items. Also, when you shop via Smile.Amazon.com you can select Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate a percentage of the sales to us. It’s a very easy way to help.

https://smile.amazon.com/

We also have an Amazon wish list to help feed our cats and kittens. We need you!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/?ie=UTF8&cid=A2LGJPU9KN7C2N

PAYPAL: Did you know you can do automatic monthly donations to Yogie and Friends via PayPal? This is an easy and effective way to help our fundraising for the animals. You can also choose to pay the fees by selecting the Friends and Family option in PayPal ensuring we would receive the entire amount of your donation. Our PayPal is: yogieandfriends@hotmail.com

CHEWY: Do you shop for pet food and supplies at Chewy. Well, we are a pet partner with Chewy.com. Enter the Chewy website from the link on the Yogie and Friends website and we will get a portion of the sales. This is a great way to help our cats and we hope you will select us as your charity. October 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Fans!

We want to thank everyone who came to our Fall Bake Sale this past Saturday. We appreciate our fans so very much. They are a lot of work for me personally since I do so much baking, but it is so good to visit with our friends and meet new ones along the way. So, thank you again!

Oreo

FOSTERS: Well, Truvy, Gladys, Sophie, J.D., and Mia, have ALL been adopted. Mia and J.D. got adopted together. We pray that Mia comes out of her shell some now. She had such a severe femur fracture and loss of her tail, that she was more skittish than the others. We hope being a center of attention helps.

OREO: Oreo is one of our FIV+ cats. He is a long-haired tuxedo cat. Recently I noticed he wasn’t his usually upbeat self. When I petted him around his neck, I noticed a crustiness on his fur near his ear. Then I felt it was wet under his ear. It turned out to be blood and he had a very nasty ear infection with a polyp in his ear. The vet removed the polyp and he is currently on oral, and ear, meds. This also has ruptured his eardrum, but not to the extent that Finn had. It hasn’t caused a vestibular issue causing him to lose balance. Because he is FIV positive it does take a bit longer to heal and limits the type of medications the vets can use. He has lost a few pounds as a result, but we are seeing some improvement in him.

Grayson

GRAYSON: Grayson has been housed as a courtesy to us, by Port City Cat Rescue. Since he had been so ill when we first rescued him, we didn’t have a spare spot for him. Grayson has developed into an amazing, and gorgeous, cat. He will be returning to us in the new cat building on October 1st. He was being fed by the person that deserted Oreo. They probably won’t remember each other, but Grayson and Oreo are two mellow cats and we will ease Grayson back in via the ferret cage. This lets the others sniff and check him out without any risk of fights. We appreciate Port City for letting us keep Grayson at their facility for so long. Thank you again!

Quinn

QUINN: Quinn, our three-legged super kitten, is still with us. We are debating on whether we will place him up for adoption or not. He has made amazing strides in his healing and he acts like any other kitten does. He climbs the cat trees, plays, and acts no different than any of the others.

FRANK: Frank, the Flame Point Siamese kitten, is still with us. He had a couple of typical kitten issues but is now well. He is big enough now to be neutered and should be so soon, then he will go to PetSmart in Shreveport to be shown for adoption. He will be adopted with an approved application via Port City Cat Rescue.

Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.

You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.

NEW/REPLACEMENT ITEMS: We use water fountains for our cats, since water is very critical for cat urinary health, and need to replace some of them. Depending on where we get them, they can range from $55 – $65 each.

We also found some new cat beds on Barksdale AFB for $14 each, versus $17 – $20 off base or online. We are trying to purchase about 8 or 9 of these. If you would like to help, you can PayPal us at yogieandfriends@hotmail.com and select the Family and Friends option that allows you to pay the fees up front and gives us 100% of your donation. You can also mail a check or money order to: Yogie and Friends, 128 Fob Lane, Frierson, LA 71027.

NEW CAT BUILDING: Our carpenter will be coming to look at the new building this week to give us a quote on building the deck and enclosure on the new building. As soon as we know what the costs will be, which lumber will be the larger cost, we will begin the fundraising and get it built as soon as possible. The enclosure also adds an extra added protection from escapes. If a cat happens to rush the door, then it will end up on the enclosure porch versus getting out into the yard. We know the cats will love having an outdoor enclosure. This will also be easier to clean, disinfect, and do pest control.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

We have several cats who are now required to be on a special diet for urinary tract issues. Mittens, Munch, Mama, Brexit, and now, Sunny, need to be on the S/O Urinary diet. This is to prevent crystals from developing in the bladder and causing blockages, which could in severe cases, cause death. Brexit was the most severe case we had with a blockage, and Mama had a large bladder stone requiring surgery. We now must feed them the Purina Pro Plan Urinary S/O diet. The 16-pound bag costs $63. If anyone would like to sponsor purchasing a bag monthly, this would be a great help to the sanctuary.

September 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Fans!

Well, we decided not to send the Fab Five (Truvy, Gladys, J.D., Sophie, and Mia) to Canada after all. We decided to keep them here locally to be placed for adoption. They are now at the PetSmart on Youree Drive in Shreveport. We know they will get great homes here.

Quinn

QUINN: Quinn, the badly injured kitten we rescued from Caddo Parish Animal Services (CPAS) that his leg amputated, has completed his laser therapy and rehab. This kitten is amazing! Despite the pelvic injury, and leg amputation, this little guy runs, plays with the other kittens, and can climb! He will climb up into the loft in our cat building. Nothing is holding him back. He has reached 4 pounds. We see good things for this little guy, and we are happy to have been able to save his life. We aren’t sure at this time if we will place him up for adoption or not. We have time to make this decision.

We are still recovering from Quinn’s vet care and if you can help us build the coffers back up from his $2000 vet bill, it would be greatly appreciated.

FRANK: Frank is the sweet, Flame Point Siamese kitten, we are still fostering. He has two people interested in adopting him, so we don’t know how much longer we will have him with us. He is now a whopping 3.6 pounds. Lol! He will be adopted with an approved application via Port City Cat Rescue.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

We have several cats who are now required to be on a special diet for urinary tract issues. Mittens, Munch, Mama, Brexit, and now, Sunny, need to be on the S/O Urinary diet. If anyone would like to sponsor purchasing a bag monthly, this would be a great help to the sanctuary.

FALL BAKE SALE: Our fall bake sale is scheduled for September 28th at Petco on Youree Drive in Shreveport. It will be held from 11a.m.- 3p.m. We have a longtime fan who is very experienced in baking gluten free baked goods and has offered to make several goodies for our bake sale. This makes us very happy since we get lots of requests for some specialized baked goods. We also have our regular vegetarian/vegan bakers making some items as well. If you would like to help us with baking any special goodies, then please let us know. It would be nice to have a unique variety of items.

NEW CAT BUILDING: The new cat building has been getting a great deal of use with our fosters and special needs kittens. Now, we are preparing to raise the funds to build the outdoor catio portion of the new building. We have investigated several ideas on how to proceed and have decided to go with a deck style catio. This will be built like any deck on the outside of a home, but we will enclose it so no cats can get out, and no predators can get in. It will keep the cats safe. At the same time, it will be much easier to disinfect and treat for flea/tick prevention, versus having the catio a grass enclosure that requires a more difficulty pest control, or cleaning. We are waiting on the quotes for the work.
