August 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Fans!

Yes, I am very late with this update. I would have had it done on time, but we had a lot of issues with kittens I wanted to share in this monthly newsletter.

We have had a very trying past couple of months. I am currently searching grants to assist with special needs cases, and other supportive type grants for Yogie and Friends. In the meantime, I am hoping our friends and fans can help us financially with your donation to the sanctuary. We are, and will remain, a 100% volunteer drive organization and your donation will ALWAYS go to support the animals Please consider helping these wonderful animals.

NEW RESCUE/S:

ROSE: Caddo Parish Animal Services (CPAS) contacted me and asked if I could help with a sweet, calico, kitten. She was not moving her back legs, so I immediately brought her to Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic. When I arrived with Rose, her temperature was at 94 degrees. A cat’s normal temp is usually 101. So, we knew there she was already in a critical situation. The x-rays showed she had a subluxation in her spine, but she was already hypothermic, and they were unable to pull her out of it. Sadly, Rose didn’t make it, but we hope she knew some moments of tenderness in her last moments.

Rose

MAVERICK/MOSHE: Maverick is a beautiful, longhaired, black kitten, that one of our long-term volunteers, Andrea Labor, and her boyfriend, found out on the Louisiana Boardwalk late Sunday evening on  July 21st. Andrea was able to foster him until we got him a new home. He was underweight, but otherwise healthy and FIV/FeLV negative. In just over a week one of our long-term fans adopted this kitten and renamed him, Moshe, which is Hebrew for “being drawn out of the water. It’s how we came up with the name for our Moses. So, another happy ending.

Moshe

QUINN: CPAS had another kitten that was dragging its back leg and had minimal use of its other rear leg. I knew this one was going to be a challenge, but not even sure if it would live. We named her, Quinn. We also brought Quinn to Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic and Dr. Core evaluated her. Quinn only weighed 2.5 pounds and you could feel the ribs and spine prominently through the fur. This was a very malnourished kitten. After the evaluation it was determined the leg was dead and needed to be amputated. There was also some pretty significant pelvic damage pushing into the sacrum. Quinn was a questionable case. We had to decide if this kitten could be saved. The thing about Quinn was the spunk. Quinn’s personality showed the will to fight and live. Surgery was done on July 30th to remove the leg. Since Quinn was already under anesthesia, Dr. Core decided to do the spay. Well, come to find out at that time, Quinn is a BOY. Lol! So, he was neutered. He tested FIV/FeLV negative, which is excellent because feline leukemia could have been a hindrance to healing. He receives laser therapy and rehab every Monday and Thursday. As of 8 August, he is up to 3.4 pounds and looking good. He is getting stronger every day and has a wonderful personality. We have put several videos of his progress on Facebook. Quinn’s medical care hit a whopping $2000, and there could be more.

FRANK: Frank is a sweet, two-pound, Flame Point Siamese kitten, that was found by a friend of ours in a warehouse at a local hospital. He is super sweet, so far very healthy, FIV/FeLV negative, and ready for adoption to an approved home. He will be adopted with an approved application via Port City Cat Rescue.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.

This past month has put a tremendous hit on our bank account as we have spent well over $3000 on vet care. I realize we cannot save them all, but we do try and help as much as we can, where we can. We hope you can help us replenish our coffers.

CRITICAL NEEDS: Vet care is always a primary need. Scoopable cat litter, preferable unscented, but we will take any, as well as cat food, are a given. We feed Friskies or Fancy Feast canned pate, or Purina Cat Chow complete. We do have some on an expensive urinary tract formula that we have to get at the vet. We go through a tremendous amount of cat litter. If you can help with a monetary donation, please do. We really hope you can help us in this area.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

FEVER OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN (FUO): As the title says, “Unknown Origin.” Never had I ever heard of this issue. When I noticed Truvy not acting playful, being exceptionally clingy, and not eating normally, I knew she was sick. I took her temperature and it was 104.5 degrees. A normal temp is usually around 101.5, so I immediately got her to the vet. She tested negative for all of the “known” possibilities, and that is when I first her the term “Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO). She was placed on I.V, fluids, then spent four days in the hospital to get her fever down. Shortly after that J.D. ended up with the same issue. He spent the weekend on fluids at the Emergency vet clinic. One vet used Onsior to bring the fever down and I have some of that on hand at the sanctuary. Good thing too since I noticed Gladys and Sophie get elevated temps. I immediately dosed them, and they recovered in less than a day.

Like many viruses we get, there is nothing more to do except supportive care, such as fever reducers and fluids. It’s a frustrating issue not to know what is causing something so it can be treated. Luckily all the kittens are doing fine, but Truvy and Gladys have started to show body temp increases over the last two days. They have received Onsior and hopefully it has been caught quickly to prevent and issues.

Here is a link for information about FUO that I hope helps educate: https://www.vetfolio.com/learn/article/the-diagnostic-approach-to-fever-of-unknown-origin-in-cats

Truvy, Sophie, Gladys, and J.D. are all spayed/neutered now. J.D. was cryptochirid , which meant he had an undescended testicle. That involved going into his abdomen, so he is now in the cone of shame and not happy about that. It’s for his own good with sutures.

MIA: The beautiful girl from CPAS with the severe femur fracture and tail amputation, is now a happy, healthy, kitten, without a tail, but doing wonderful.

MILLIE, BENNY, & JOON: Do you remember this crew I found in Bossier City? Well, Benny and Joon went to Canada on transport. Canada doesn’t have the stray/feral population we do here, so they have been requesting kittens for adoption. Benny and Joon made the cut and got adopted within a few days of arrival. Millie was adopted by our VP. It makes us very happy to have good reports.

I was contacted late yesterday afternoon to ask if I would be interested in sending the Fab Five to Canada. They requested more kittens for adoption. I agreed since I have seen the success and care of Benny and Joon. They will leave here the end of August. I will miss them terribly, but happy they will get a new, forever, home.

AMAZON WISH LIST: We have updated our Amazon wish list, we have added the Seresto flea collars, and some other much needed food items. Also, when you shop via Smile.Amazon.com you can select Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate a percentage of the sales to us. It’s a very easy way to help.

SPONSORSHIP:  Sponsorship is a very important way to help our animals. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for. Would you please consider sponsoring one of our animals? We really need you.

Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.

You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.

PAYPAL: Did you know you can do automatic monthly donations to Yogie and Friends via PayPal? This is an easy and effective way to help our fundraising for the animals. You can also choose to pay the fees by selecting the Friends and Family option in PayPal ensuring we would receive the entire amount of your donation. Our PayPal is: yogieandfriends@hotmail.com

CHEWY: Do you shop for pet food and supplies at Chewy. Well, we are a pet partner with Chewy.com. Enter the Chewy website from the link on the Yogie and Friends website and we will get a portion of the sales. This is a great way to help our cats and we hope you will select us as your charity. July 2019 Newsletter

It looks like July is starting off with a bang, and not just with fireworks!

Natasha

NATASHA: We are sad to report the death of our sweet, Russian Blue, kitty, Natasha, on June 14th. Natasha was about 14 years old and we rescued her from a woman who was unable to continue to care for her, or her son, Boris. She was a very sweet cat and she enjoyed a good life with us at Yogie and Friends. We will miss her.

We try and take a break in between our events and get some rest and network with other cat rescues to help get cats and kittens adopted. It’s another reason we, as individuals, choose to foster. Fostering is both difficult and rewarding. Difficult in that we must let a sweet animal go to a new, forever, home and we will miss them. Rewarding in the fact we know we helped save a life. We realize we cannot save them all, but we try hard to save as many as possible. If we can just get more people to spay and neuter their pets in order to control the pet population, then we can save so many more.

I personally am fostering five kittens for a local rescue. The only reason I agreed to help them is that I know they will get them adopted and not abandon them with me. It gets quite overwhelming with texts, emails, phone calls, and Facebook, messages, with a bunch of requests to take kittens, or adult, cats, only to have to say “No” to the requesters. It’s very hard on us.

Please, spay and neuter your pets!

FACILITY UPDATE: Now that all of the exotics are no longer with us in Frierson, we have recently opened up the Serval and Bobcat pens, connected that to the pen the FIV cats use, and now they have more than 2600 square feet of outdoor enclosure to enjoy being outside, but safe from any predators, and they cannot get out and injured, or, killed. It’s so roomy and they love it.

Benny & Joon

NEW RESCUE/S:

Millie

MILLIE, BENNY, & JOON: On June 15th I was driving to pick up a friend when I saw two young kittens walking down the sidewalk close to her house. I couldn’t ignore them, so I stopped, and they were very friendly kittens. I heard a meow from the bushes, and it was their mother. I found a bowl near the house with a “FOR RENT” sign on it and gave them water. They were very thirsty. Mom was also very sweet and accepting of me. I texted my friend to grab some cat food and walk down the street where I was. We believe these beauties were abandoned at this house. They are now all three safe and getting ready to be placed for adoption. Mom is now, Millie, and her two boys are, Benny and Joon. They have all three tested negative for FIV/FeLV. They are scheduled to be spayed/neutered on July 5th.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

TRUVY: Truvy is the smallest of the foster kittens I am fostering for Port City Cat Rescue. She is a tiny tortie kitten. I noticed she was not playing like she normally does but was still eating. Still, I knew she was not acting normal. She felt very warm to me, so I took her temperature and it was 105.2. Normal is around 101. She spent four days in the hospital on I.V. fluids and getting some meds to bring her temperature down. Her blood work showed no reason for this fever and she also tested FIV/FeLV negative. The vet said some will get fevers of unknown origin, but we will test her for a blood borne illness called, Haemobartonellosis. She is back at the sanctuary and doing well.

J.D.: J.D. has also come down with a fever of 105.1, so he has been at the E.R. vet since yesterday and remains there tonight. He will come home tomorrow. He tested negative for FIV/FeLV, but he is slightly anemic. This may be haemobartonellosis and we will have him, and Truvy, tested for it by our regular vet. His temperature came down in a matter of hours, versus Truvy taking a couple of days.

JD

Grayson

GRAYSON: Our local stray, Grayson, had some health issues, but is much improved, friendly, and ready to be neutered. He will be neutered on the 5th and finally brought to the sanctuary once he is healed. He is a sweet guy.

April 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Fans!

The weather is starting to finally cooperate a little bit and the grounds are starting to dry, but it is still very wet at the sanctuary and that is making it more difficult to do the much-needed work of clearing our land. We are trying to find someone that could do the clearing, and leveling, of the property so we can decide on how we can make an even better facility for our cats.

BAKE SALE: Don’t forget our upcoming bake sale on April 13th from 11a.m.- 3p.m. at Petco on Youree Drive, Shreveport. These bake sales are very important in helping raise much needed funds for our cats, as well as educating the public about FIV/FeLV.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

FINN: Finn had his follow-up with our vet on the 25th and he continues to improve. The vet decreased his Prednisolone from 3.5 ml, down to 2.0 ml. We are pleased with his progress and watch him closely for any changes to this positive outcome.

MITTENS: Mittens, the cat that fractured her canine, doesn’t show any signs of infection or other negative issues as a result of the fracture. We are happy about this since many cats end up getting sinus infections, or need a root canal, after a tooth fracture. We will still bring her in to have the vet recheck the tooth to make sure there is no hidden problem.

NATASHA: Natasha, the cat with a spot she kept licking that developed staph is better. She does not need further treatment at this point.

MAMA: Mama kitty is a sweet, about 11 or 12-year-old, Calico, that is not FIV/FELV positive, developed, or possibly hadn’t completely healed from, a urinary tract infection. The last time we had her treated she had a great deal of blood in her urine, and some crystals. I heard her crying when she went to use the litter box and noticed there was not a lot of urine present, and she made multiple attempts. Since I am very familiar with the signs, I immediately took her back to our vet. An ultrasound revealed a large bladder stone and her bladder walls were very inflamed. She needed surgery, which cost us $1200, to have the stone removed. Fortunately, the pathology revealed it was not a cancerous stone, but was material the same as the crystals. She is on the prescription urinary diet. She has her follow-up on April 2nd to have her staples removed.

Urinary tract infections (URIs) are not an uncommon issue for older cats and usually requires the more senior cats needing a change in diet. When a cat develops crystals in their urine it can lead to a dangerous blockage, and it is painful for the cat. Therefore, water is critical for cats. We keep multiple water fountains, as well as water bowls, throughout our cat houses. It’s another reason we are working hard on finding a better diet, preferably NOT a dry kibble diet. It is more difficult since we have 66 cats we are caring for, but in the long run it’s all about the cats and we will do what is needed for them.

FLEA CONTROL:  We are still trying to get Seresto Flea collars for all our Yogie cats. Someone recently purchased three off our Amazon Wish list, and we thank you for that. We have 66 cats at the sanctuary and hope you will help us get collars for ALL the cats. These collars last for 8 months and that makes it around $7 a month for preventative, versus the pricier topical flea meds we get at our vets.to death. Prevention is key. If you can help us get these items, then please let us know. We want all our animals to be comfortable and parasite free.
