March 2020 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!

I’m a little late with the update this month. I wanted to wait on some things before I did so it would be in this update.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES: Considering the fact we have 68 cats between our Frierson and Bossier locations, it is not unexpected to have more than the average medical issues. I truly wish it were not the case, but it is. We would love to go a very long time without any medical issues, but we haven’t been that lucky. The vet said that some of the problems we have had, for instance, ears and eardrum problems, that we really cannot prevent some of it. We are using some probiotics and other supplements such as lysine, to aid in keeping the cats healthy. It is a battle at times, but we persevere.

Theo (Tayo), our sweet little snowshoe Siamese kitten, just spent three days in the hospital. He developed a fever of unknown origin. His temperature got up to 104.7 when I took it, normal should be about 101. He was on I.V. and antibiotics. He is back at the sanctuary, but he did have us worried.

Mittens is about 11, or 12, years old, and over the past couple of months we have been treating her for ear infections. She is one that tends to have an overabundance of wax growth in her ears. Unfortunately, as a result, she had an eardrum rupture. She has responded well to treatment. She had to go under anesthesia for an ear flush. The vet showed me the video and I honestly could not believe my eyes. The vet said they compensate well and are experts at hiding illness. She will require twice a week ear cleaning.

Quinn, the three-legged kitten, and Oscar, another young boy, have developed conjunctivitis in their eyes. They are both receiving eye drops. It’s a lot like having toddlers in a daycare.

Yeti – Yeti is a beautiful white cat we found roaming the Yogie property. He had tested slight positive for Feline Leukemia. We always wait about six months and do a retest. Well, on February 28th he retested NEGATIVE. We are super happy because the leukemia cats don’t do as well. This was especially happy news.

We owe Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic over $2000 right now. We are working hard on getting that paid off.

NEW CAT BUILDING: The weather finally cooperated enough for us to get the metal porch roof on the new building, but we were short a piece and should have it completed this coming weekend. Once it is enclosed the cats can happily, and safely, enjoy being outside. We can’t wait. We will get many photos of the finished product with the cats enjoying it.

PRESCRIPTION DIETS: We currently have nine cats on special urinary diets, as well as three cats, on special digestive diets. These are either purchased at the veterinarian clinic, or another authorized seller with a prescription. These are quite expensive. A case of 24 cans is $50+ and the bags of dry formula is $60 per bag. One seven-pound bag of another diet is $45. This is just another reason we need your help. We hope you can help with your donation.

SPONSORSHIP:  We are working on biographies of all our cats at the sanctuary. We are working on getting good photos of them all and will post them on our website. We have people starting to sponsor our cats and that makes us very happy. Would you consider sponsoring a cat? This is a simple way you can help. Sponsorship is a very important way to help our animals. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for. Please consider sponsoring one of our animals.  The cats really need you.

Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.

You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.

CRITICAL NEEDS: Vet care is always a primary need. Scoopable cat litter, preferable unscented, but we will take any. We feed Friskies or Fancy Feast canned pate, but we have chosen to change to Purina Naturals for our dry food. We are trying to get our cats on an even better diet. We do have several cats on an expensive urinary tract formula that we have to get at the vet. We go through a tremendous amount of cat litter. If you can help with a monetary donation, please do. We really hope you can help us in this area.

We are spending about $1500 a month on food and litter.

AMAZON WISH LIST: We have updated our Amazon wish list, we have added the Seresto flea collars, and some other much needed food items. Also, when you shop via Smile.Amazon.com you can select Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate a percentage of the sales to us. It’s a very easy way to help.

We also have an Amazon wish list to help feed our cats and kittens. We need you!

You can also choose to pay the fees by selecting the Friends and Family option in PayPal ensuring we would receive the entire amount of your donation. Our PayPal is: yogieandfriends@hotmail.com

CHEWY: Do you shop for pet food and supplies at Chewy. Well, we are a pet partner with Chewy.com. February 2020 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!

We are planning so many things to help raise funds for our cats. Our biggest needs are food, litter, and, veterinary care. We are using vet approved pro biotic and kidney health items to help keep the cats healthy. We have several geriatric cats, and kidney health is especially important for this population.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

We recently brought one of our cats, Smokey, to our veterinarian for what looked like a tick in his ear. When we got closer to him, we knew this was not a tick and saw a bunch of these lumps in both of his ears. Upon examination at our vet, he scoped his ears and said there were more masses in both ears that required sedation and a deeper scoping of his ears. When Dr. Core put Smokey under anesthesia, he said there were so many masses deeper in both ears. He had not seen a cat with this many masses in his ears. He ablated them with a laser and sent some off to pathology. Fortunately, ALL masses were benign. They are called ceruminous adenoma and ceruminous cysts. Smokey had some medicine for his ears, and he acts like he feels much better too. We are so happy for a positive outcome. There is no real explanation for what causes this. But, to help hopefully prevent anymore, we are cleaning his ears weekly.

Another of our cats suddenly developed ulcers in both of his eyes. He is responding well to eye meds.

Mama cat, a sweet calico of ours, has a dime size mass on the side of her head. She will have surgery to remove it this coming (3 Feb) Monday. Hopefully it is benign. Mama is around 12 years old and has had some other health issues over the years but has been otherwise healthy.

Vet bills continue to be a huge part of our main financial needs. We hope you will help us build our coffers for these emergencies.

NEW INTAKES: We have taken in two emergency cases. One cat, Ms. Gray, an approximately 3-year-old tortie, needed to be rehomed due to her owner going into the Veterans Home. Socks, a sweet gray and white cat, around nine years old, had to be rehomed due to a medical situation by her former owner. She was at extreme risk of euthanasia.

NEW CAT BUILDING: The roof is now on our pergola, most of the porch is framed in the area to put the fence up, but we are waiting on the metal for the porch roof over the new building portion. We have just had some very rainy weather putting lots of delays on things, but we are close.

This is very tough on our bank account, but it’s cheaper than serious medical issues requiring expensive vet care. This is just another reason we need your help. We hope you can help with your donation.

Happy New Year to our Yogie and Friends Fans!

Another year has come and gone, and we always wonder where has the time gone? Some of our plans for 2019 came to fruition, and some are still a work in progress. That’s okay though. It comes with the territory of the type of work we do. We must prioritize what we can, and will do, but the priority is ALWAYS the health and well-being of our animals. If that puts us behind on some work completion, that is fine with us. If our animals are healthy, safe, and, happy, then that is good. The other things will work their way out.

Thank you to ALL our volunteer staff. Everyone at Yogie and Friends is a volunteer. None of us receives any compensation for the work we do at the sanctuary because we want 100% of the proceeds to go to taking care of the animals. So, thanks to our volunteers. Here are the Yogie and Friends people:

Tim Mills – Founder and Board Member
Jenny Senier – Director
Vicki Volk – Vice President and Board Member
Damon and Paige Bass – Webmasters
Jaret Snow – Board Member
Alan Golden – Board Member
Andrea Labor – Volunteer Staff

Thank you to the awesome veterinarians who get us through the difficult times and caring for our animals. Our veterinarians at Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic, Dr. Core, Dr. Olsen, and Dr. Daville. And, Dr. Squires of Halcyon Veterinary Hospital. We don’t want to forget the vet techs and support staff that work hard keeping things on track. We appreciate you all.

We have had some challenges and sad losses throughout 2019, but it is not unexpected due to the nature of our rescue. We are heartbroken with every loss.

The people and animals who we loved and lost during 2019:

Lt. Dan (DSH gray tabby kitten) – June 2019
Natasha (DSH Russian Blue) – 14 June 2019
Rose (DSH Calico) – July 2019
Don Sherret (Our Friend and first webmaster) – 11 August 2019
Boo (DSH) Tuxedo – 21 Oct 2019
Oreo (DLH) Tuxedo – 18 Nov 2019

A very big, and very personal, loss to us all was that of our friend, and first webmaster, Don Edson Sherret, of Shreveport, Louisiana. Don was a huge fan of our mission with both big, and small, cats. We miss him dearly and know he is probably relaxing with our animals who went before him and is welcoming all our cats that have left us after him.

This is very tough on our bank account, but it’s cheaper than serious medical issues requiring expensive vet care. This is just another reason we need your help. We hope you can help with your donation.

NEW CAT BUILDING: The pergola has been built for the outside portion of the catio. After the holidays, our carpenter is going to frame out the rest of the porch, put the roofs on everything, then enclose with the fence for our cat’s safety. We cannot wait. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

SPONSORSHIP:  Would you consider sponsoring a cat? This is a simple way you can help. Sponsorship is a very important way to help our animals. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals.
