May 2018

Greetings Yogie Fans!

Taz: On 15 April 2018, our beautiful bobcat, Taz, crossed the rainbow bridge. Taz arrived at Yogie and Friends Exotic Cat Sanctuary in 2003. We were told he was three or four years old. He had been a privately owned “pet” being fed nothing but boneless, skinless, chicken breasts. This was not a proper diet for him. He had also been declawed on both his front and rear paws. He was going to be put in the “wild” by his previous owner. He surely would have died since he possessed neither the skills, or claws, needed to survive. We gave him a proper diet, vet care, and of course, love and kindness. We are glad his last years were spent with us in comfort. We will miss him.

Give for Good Giving Day: We want to thank those of you who contributed to us during the annual Give for Good Giving Day. It was a success for the local community. Thank you!

PayPal: Did you know you can do automatic monthly donations to Yogie and Friends via PayPal? This is an easy and effective way to help our fundraising for the animals. You can also choose to pay the fees by selecting the Friends and Family option in PayPal ensuring we would receive the entire amount of your donation.

New Cat Building: We have good news to report on the new cat building. Our GoFundMe was a success and this coming Sunday our electrician is going to connect the electrical. We still don’t have all the carpentry work such as window/door finish and trim, and the lofts still need to be built. We also haven’t decided on the best floor just yet, but we are close. We feel this will be ready for the cats to move into within the month. We are very excited about this. Even though this current fundraiser met its goal we will keep it open a little longer since we are still paying for the building itself and it all helps us in the overall process. Thank you so much for your help with this much needed project.

April 2018 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie Fans!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Spring Bake Sale. These are always crazy fun for us to have.

Caspar: On Friday evening, March 23rd, our solid white cat, Caspar, started throwing up. It was the usual look of a cat throwing up food and we had no reason to be concerned. Except, he continued to intermittently do so and began to pant. Since cats do not normally pant I got very nervous and rushed him to the emergency vet. Within 25 minutes of his first episode Caspar was dead. It was so unexpected and shocking. The vet said he had a slight heart murmur and lots of fluid on his lungs. Some fluid even came out during intubation. That’s a lot of fluid. The sad thing is that he had exhibited absolutely NO signs of illness. He was playing and eating normally that day. The vet suspected Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy, which is a condition that often does not present any symptoms and the animal is suddenly dead. It has happened to several of our friend’s pets. Caspar was not an FIV/FeLV positive cat. He had been seen by a vet within the past six months and there were no indications of a heart murmur. We are still shocked by all this. There was nothing we could have done, but it still hurts us terribly.

Oskar: Oskar, the very injured black cat we helped last month continues to improve and has adjusted well to living inside at the sanctuary. He is very comfortable with us.

Give for Good Giving Day: May 1st is the annual, Give for Good giving day. It starts just after midnight on May 1st and runs all day. It’s an opportunity for non-profits all over the country to raise much needed funds for their organization.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Spring Bake Sale. These are always crazy fun for us to have.

Eat a Dog, Save a Cat: Yogie and Friends will have a cat building fundraiser to help finish the new cat building. We will have our, Eat a (Hot) Dog, Save a Cat, hotdog fundraiser at Petco on Youree drive in Shreveport. This event will run Tuesday, May 1st, from 11a.m.-2:30p.m. You can get a grilled hot dog, chips, and bottle of water, for a donation of $5.95. Kona Ice will also be with us during this time selling their amazing Ice drinks. We will also have our cool Yogie and Friends merchandise as well as several raffles. We hope you will come by and help the cats during this time.

New Cat Building: The new cat house has been an unbelievable and frustrating challenge to get completed. We have found a well-respected, and reputable, building contractor, that came out to look at the building and gave us a price of finishing the inside to include, tape and mud floating, trim and finish work, cat walk shelves and lofts, and any touch ups inside. The cost of materials and labor will be $1650. At this time, we do not have a lot of funds to finish the building and we have created a GoFundMe to help get this building completed. Once that is done and we get more funds, then we will look at doing the outdoor catio. The indoor work is the priority, so we can move the cats in.

March 2018 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie Fans!

We don’t want you all to feel that all we do is share sad news. But, the nature of the work we do here at Yogie and Friends will involve loss. We rescue animals that many would have given up on long ago. The life we give them is the best we can despite the challenges the animal may have. With that being said, we have to announce more loss.

Yogie: Yogie was a young lioness that arrived at Yogie and Friends from Greenbriar, Arkansas, on 26 May 2001. She was just a year old. She died on 18 February 2018. Fortunately, Tim had just visited with her on January 8th and both had the love and joy of the final visit. R.I.P. Yogie girl. 2000 – 18 February 2018.

Petey: Petey was a gorgeous, FIV positive, domestic cat, that we rescued just one hour before he was scheduled for euthanasia. He was going to be destroyed just because he was FIV positive. He never received any good information regarding his “story”, but the vet estimated him to be around 10 years old. He suddenly started losing weight, and rapidly so. After much testing it was found he had developed kidney disease because of lymphoma. It was quick. I had him at my house for the last five days of his life trying to help him eat and to give him the most loving last days of his life. The painful decision to let him go had to be made for his benefit. It’s always heartbreaking for us. Petey crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 27 February 2018.

Oskar: We recently found a very injured cat that we thought we were going to have to have humanely euthanized. He was bloody, battered, muddy, and limping badly. He looked like a car hit him. We were able to capture him and got him to our vet. He was put under a light anesthesia and examined. Surprisingly he had no broken bones, but his wounds were puncture wounds indicative of bites and fighting. Our vet said she had never seen so many abscesses on an animal. This tells us he has been in several fights over a long period of time for the wounds to fester that way. The vet treated his wounds and he was healthy enough to also have neutered. He received antibiotic and pain injections. Sadly, and not surprisingly, he tested positive for FIV. A pleasant surprise is that he is a very friendly and affectionate cat. After his follow-up and clearance from our vet he will be placed in the introduction cage in the FIV cat building and live with us at the sanctuary. Welcome to Yogie and Friends, Oskar!

Happy Birthday Moses! 12th Birthday on 27 February:

Vet Care: Because of the nature of our rescue we often have emergency, chronic, and unusual medical conditions. With the recent issues for surgeries on Voodoo’s eye, Petey’s hospitalization, and more, we have had a big hit on our checking account. We could really use your financial assistance at this time to rebuild our coffers for future needs.

We have recently been consulting with several veterinarians and animal nutritionists. The reason we have been is because there is a great deal more evidence to feed a wet food diet versus dry. We’ve kind of felt this to be a better choice just by seeing the cats we have who, for some reason or another, have been on a wet food diet only, seem to be the healthiest of our cats and the best weight. Dry food is often a choice by many due to the convenience, and, overall cost. But, when it comes down to the health issues we have seen in cats being fed a dry diet and the resulting vet bills, we believe overall, it’s a better choice to feed wet food only. The issue is how we are going to achieve this goal. That’s the big question. And, it is a time-consuming effort since it will require us to not leave food for free feeding. We are currently working on updating our wish lists on Amazon, Chewy, and other sites used for donating items to Yogie and Friends.

New Cat Building: Getting the new cat building insulated and drywalled has been a challenge. With the loss of our sweet volunteer that got injured and could not help us for free, we have hired someone to do the work and have hit many walls regarding his work. The issue has been getting him to arrive on time and do the work as contracted. We are almost there, but not without a lot of frustration for us. When the walls are done we will be searching for a new, more reputable, and reliable, carpenter, to do some finish work.

SPONSOR A SPECIAL NEEDS CAT:  Please consider sponsoring a special needs cat. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals.
