November 2015 Newsletter
Hello!
Hard to believe it’s already November. Where has this year gone? It has been a difficult one for us, but one we look forward to soon putting behind us and moving on toward a positive, new beginning for us both personally and professionally at Yogie and Friends. We can only do so with the amazing support we’ve been getting from our loyal fans. The truth has, and will, continue to prevail.
Bake Sale and Fundraiser:
Thank you everyone who came out in the awful weather to support our animals at our bake sale. We honestly did not think we would do as well as we did because the weather really was very bad. It just goes to show you how much our fans and supporters really care. Thank you so much!
We want to introduce our newest cat, Freddie Kroger:
On Halloween I received a message from a friend working at the new Kroger Marketplace that is soon to open on Airline Drive in Bossier City. She said there was a kitten inside the store they could hear crying and needed help catching it and getting it safely out of the store. I went to the store and assessed the situation. I will say kittens manage to get themselves into some awkward spots. This was no exception.
I went back the next morning and set a safe capture trap in the pharmacy where we saw the kitten and placed some sardines in the trap. I received a text the next morning that we successfully caught the little guy. He is a very sweet, and loving, possibly 8 to 12 week old, gray tabby kitten.
Good news! He is already adopted and going to his forever home this coming Sunday the 8th. We are thrilled to have him adopted already. We have strict guidelines for adoption to ensure only the best future for our cats/kittens.
Paws in Paradise:

Yogie and Friends Cat Sanctuary will have a booth this coming Saturday, November 7th from 10 am – 3 pm will be Paws in Paradise event at Margaritaville Casino in Bossier City. This is Margaritaville’s first annual fundraiser and adoption event to help fund and provide an adoption opportunity, for the local 501c3 rescues. We will have our amazing tee shirts, Cardew Collectible ceramic tea pots, cups, and more to help raise much needed funds for all our Yogie cats, big and small. Dr. Wise of Wise Choice Animal Hospital will be doing $20 microchipping as well. This is an amazing opportunity for you to get your dogs and/or cats microchipped at an amazing price. This is going to be a very fun event. Come out and support your local rescues.
Dedication: We are working on a future date to dedicate the two buildings housing our domestic cats at Yogie and Friends. The houses will be named in memory and honor of two special people who meant the world to us. It’s just a small way for us to honor their memories.
Our Big Cats: We still support our 8 remaining big cats in boarding in Oklahoma. They are safe, happy, and healthy, and we get to visit them often.
Volunteers: We always need volunteer help. Now that we are not housing big cats, our volunteers do not have to be 18 or older. However, we do need you to have a current, valid driver’s license and a way to get yourself to the sanctuary to work if you volunteer. Also, just spending time loving on the cats so they get that much needed human attention. If you are interested and can help, then please do.
Wish List: As always, cash is king. We still have bills to pay. We have electric, water, veterinarian, and some construction bills. Some items we need are: Revolution for cats, cat food (currently we use 4 Health Grain Free and Friskies canned), cat litter (mostly Tidy Cat without Glade scented), and toys and treats. Cash is always easier since we can buy items at a rescue discount.
Support a Special Needs Cat: FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is a feline only, slow-acting virus. It is so slow to progress that most FIV+ cats die of old age. Once thought to be deadly and highly contagious, it has since been found to be neither. Just as HIV was once believed to be a death sentence for those afflicted, so it is still with FIV. Only in the case of cats, the mere diagnosis produces that death sentence. Fortunately there are many veterinarians who don’t believe that this is the case and this is why we got four FIV cats. We got them from veterinarians who did not want to kill them. We do NOT want these cats to die just because of this diagnosis either. They deserve the chance to live. And live they will with us. Now that we have our first FIV positive cats living comfortably in their new home at Yogie and Friends, they will need your support. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. None of the Yogie volunteer staff receives ANY compensation for the work we do.
Donate Cash:
Donations of cash are what we need most. You can donate online via PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account to use a credit card to make a one-time donation via PayPal.
Sponsors Needed:
Please note that some cats may be sponsored by more than one person, but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.
You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.

We still need your financial help with the nine big cats we are boarding and any and all donations are appreciated as we continue to care for them. They are safe and well.

LOUISIANA AND TEXAS KROGER SHOPPERS: If you have not already done so, please don’t forget to get your Kroger Community Rewards linked to your Kroger Plus Card. Every time you shop at a Texas or Louisiana Kroger and use your Plus Card, Kroger will donate a portion of the sale to Yogie and Friends to help the FIV and other special needs cats we have at the sanctuary. Every little bit helps! Here is the link to enroll or sign in (if you are already enrolled). Choose us as your charity of choice… NPO #80724, Yogie and Friends Exotic Cat Sanctuary (we will be fixing the name later, but it’s still all good). https://www.kroger.com/communityrewards
Combined Federal Campaign (CFC): CFC is in full swing right now, so if you are a Military member or Federal Employee we hope you will donate to Yogie and Friends via CFC. This program is easy and another good way to give financial assistance to the big cats. We hope you will please consider Yogie and Friends when making your CFC contribution. Our CFC number is 42427.
Recycle Ink Cartridges and Cell Phones: Please consider helping us with our recycling program. Please don’t throw those old ink jet/laser jet cartridges in the trash. Give them to us. We recycle them and get cash for the cats. You can box up the cartridges; put a prepaid label on it that we will provide you, and then drop it off at any UPS shipping facility or they can pick it up at your business. If you need labels, then just contact us and we will get some to you.

October 2015 Newsletter
Hello Fans!
October is here and thankfully some cooler weather is finally upon us. We, and the animals, are loving the cooler days. It also makes it a lot easier for us to complete the modifications on the habitats for the domestic cats.
I want to thank our fans for standing by us through all the lies and false allegations against Yogie and Friends and being there for us. It’s very difficult to fight lies on social media and that is why we choose not to have a Facebook page at this time. We don’t want to expend time and effort fighting all the threats toward us and negative comments in social media. It doesn’t do any good anyway. We have had personal family losses during this fight (my mother in January and our Vice President’s husband in April). We are still in mourning for our lost family members, as well as our animal family. And sadly, the fight is not over. So, we just want you to know how much we appreciate you and are grateful to those of you who have visited us throughout our 14 wonderful years as a big cat rescue. We need your continued support and prayers now more than ever as we move on in this new direction. Thank you so much!

Wabbajack
Wabbajack the kitten: We want to thank everyone who helped by donating to Wabbajack’s veterinarian bill. He had exploratory surgery and that never yielded any answers. There were some questionable things in his intestines regarding motility, but it still left us without any definitive diagnosis. He is, however, doing very well now and back with his foster family. We fell short of our goal, but the final tally of the care he received was $2500. We are just very happy he is well and thriving. Thank you again for caring.
Buddy: We are sad to report that one of the four cats we received when their owner died in July has himself, died. We are always sad when we lose any animal and it’s never easy for us to say goodbye. We just hope he is healthy and happy and in the loving arms of his late owner, Johnny, and playing like a young kitten. We will miss Buddy.
Hope: Hope was a kitten we received from Ninna’s Road to Rescue because she tested positive for FIV. Since we knew that young kittens can test false positive for viruses we waited till she was about 5 months old and retested her. We are happy to report she has tested NEGATIVE for ALL viruses. She is now living with the non-FIV cats and is adoptable. Yay Hope!
We want to introduce our newest cats, Bailey and Maggie Mae:
Bailey is a very sweet and affectionate FIV positive boy that we received from our friends at Shreveport Bossier Animal Rescue (SBAR). Our partners at SBAR see the value in keeping cats like Bailey alive and we were happy to help give him a forever home with us at Yogie and Friends. Bailey is about 3 -5 years old, happy, cuddly, and a joy to have with us. Welcome aboard Bailey.
Maggie Mae: Maggie Mae is a 4 month old long-haired Tortie I found in my neighborhood and just finished quarantine. She is also virus negative and being prepared for adoption. She is still very shy and timid and bonded with me, but we are socializing her with other people and cats.

Taz
Taz the Bobcat: Taz is our very old bobcat that has lived with us at Yogie and Friends since 2004. In December 2014 we sent in our paperwork for permit renewal, as we have done since 2002, and we were inspected by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) on September 10th. LDWF was happy with his habitat and care, but there seems to be some question as to a new requirement to keep Taz at Yogie and Friends that we are awaiting for some word back on. Please keep us in your prayers regarding this issue because we don’t want to have to relocate Taz after all these years. If we do, he will go to the GW Zoo in Oklahoma to join the rest of our Yogie and Friends cats in boarding there. Pray that this will NOT be the case. We want him to live out the rest of his life with those of us he has known and loved for most of his life.
Work Completion: We have completed the outdoor catio for the FIV positive cat house, but since these cats are in close proximity to our bobcat they will not be allowed outdoors in the catio. There are concerns that they will make Taz sick, so we will just keep them indoors, which they are fine with.
The Non-FIV positive cats located in Tigger’s old habitat now have an indoor building to go in and out of. We are using the hurricane rated cell phone tower buildings as their house and they are really cool. They have heat and air for all seasons. The cats are loving it.
Our Big Cats: We still support our 8 remaining big cats in boarding in Oklahoma. They are safe, happy, and healthy, and we get to visit them often.
Volunteers: We need volunteer help. Now that we are not housing big cats, our volunteers do not have to be 18 or older. However, we do need you to have a current, valid driver’s license and a way to get yourself to the sanctuary to work if you volunteer. Too many times in the past people had to depend on others for transportation to the sanctuary and that doesn’t always work out and left us in a bind for help on work days. Volunteering can be anything from fundraising, cleaning litter boxes and cat dishes to mowing and weed eating the property, as well as carpentry skills. Also, just spending time loving on the cats so they get that much needed human attention. If you are interested and can help, then please do.

Hello Yogie Fans!
It’s finally September, but it still feels like summer here in the south so please don’t forget to provide cool, fresh water, and shelter from the direct sun and heat for any outside animals you may have. Also, don’t stop using flea and heartworm preventions. That’s something you need all year round.
Help Us Save Wabbajack the kitten! We have a young cat, just five months old, being fostered by one of our volunteers and he is very sick. We really need your help to save Wabbajack. As of this writing we have already paid $1500 for his vet care and he is not out of the woods. Speaking with the ER vet this morning he is going to need more diagnostics to rule out other viruses. We really, really, want to save this sweet boy. We may be going beyond the $3000 we are trying to raise via GoFundMe. We will update as we know more. But please, if you can help us with his medical bills please do. We thank you so much!

We want to introduce our newest cat, Blackie:

Blackie
Blackie is a very, very, shy, maybe six month old, solid black cat. He was brought to us from one of our supporters as a survivor of a community colony of cats being killed by coyotes. He may never socialize with us, but he is safe. We are constantly working with cats like him in the hopes we can get them over their fear of us. If not, then that’s okay too. They will always have a good home with us.
Changes and new direction: We still support our 8 remaining big cats in boarding in Oklahoma. It’s one of the hardest things for us every time we visit them and have to say goodbye again. It’s never, ever, easy. But! They are safe, happy, and healthy! So now, we must, for our emotional health and well-being, move on in this new direction for the special needs domestic cats. One way we are doing this is the very painful repurposing of our property. This means taking down the cat name signs on the habitats (but we have a friend who is making a special remembrance for us to display at the sanctuary), removing the big cat toys and bringing them to Oklahoma, taking down the fence and habitats as they are now and remodeling them to accommodate small, domestic cats (we are donating the fence materials to Lumberjack Rescue in Springhill since it is more than we will need and they very much need it), and then remodeling for the little cats. You can see in the photos the progress of the catio we are making on the old gift shop. It is so close to completion and then the cats inside will be able to enjoy going indoors and outdoors in safety from humans and predators. Once this is finished we will continue work on the building we will adjoin to Tigger’s old habitat for the other cats. It’s coming along nicely, but we do need volunteers to help make it work.
Volunteers: We need volunteer help. Now that we are not housing big cats, our volunteers do not have to be 18 or older. However, we do need you to have a current, valid driver’s license and a way to get yourself to the sanctuary to work if you volunteer. Our Big Cats: Putty Tat and Gomez, two of our beloved tigers, now have a much larger habitat and they are thrilled. It looks almost like Putty Tat was smiling when he was moved. At a cost of $8500 we think it was well worth it. We are raising the funds to reimburse for this new habitat and appreciate any and all help our fans can provide. You will see in the pics just how nice the new digs are. We will post a gofundme link to help with this.
