July 2019 Newsletter

It looks like July is starting off with a bang, and not just with fireworks!

Natasha

NATASHA: We are sad to report the death of our sweet, Russian Blue, kitty, Natasha, on June 14th. Natasha was about 14 years old and we rescued her from a woman who was unable to continue to care for her, or her son, Boris. She was a very sweet cat and she enjoyed a good life with us at Yogie and Friends. We will miss her.

We try and take a break in between our events and get some rest and network with other cat rescues to help get cats and kittens adopted. It’s another reason we, as individuals, choose to foster. Fostering is both difficult and rewarding. Difficult in that we must let a sweet animal go to a new, forever, home and we will miss them. Rewarding in the fact we know we helped save a life. We realize we cannot save them all, but we try hard to save as many as possible. If we can just get more people to spay and neuter their pets in order to control the pet population, then we can save so many more.

I personally am fostering five kittens for a local rescue. The only reason I agreed to help them is that I know they will get them adopted and not abandon them with me. It gets quite overwhelming with texts, emails, phone calls, and Facebook, messages, with a bunch of requests to take kittens, or adult, cats, only to have to say “No” to the requesters. It’s very hard on us.

Please, spay and neuter your pets!

FACILITY UPDATE: Now that all of the exotics are no longer with us in Frierson, we have recently opened up the Serval and Bobcat pens, connected that to the pen the FIV cats use, and now they have more than 2600 square feet of outdoor enclosure to enjoy being outside, but safe from any predators, and they cannot get out and injured, or, killed. It’s so roomy and they love it.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.

CRITICAL NEEDS: Vet care is always a primary need. Scoopable cat litter, preferable unscented, but we will take any, as well as cat food, are a given. We feed Friskies or Fancy Feast canned pate, or Purina Cat Chow complete. We do have some on an expensive urinary tract formula that we have to get at the vet. We go through a tremendous amount of cat litter. If you can help with a monetary donation, please do. We really hope you can help us in this area.

Benny & Joon

NEW RESCUE/S:

Millie

MILLIE, BENNY, & JOON: On June 15th I was driving to pick up a friend when I saw two young kittens walking down the sidewalk close to her house. I couldn’t ignore them, so I stopped, and they were very friendly kittens. I heard a meow from the bushes, and it was their mother. I found a bowl near the house with a “FOR RENT” sign on it and gave them water. They were very thirsty. Mom was also very sweet and accepting of me. I texted my friend to grab some cat food and walk down the street where I was. We believe these beauties were abandoned at this house. They are now all three safe and getting ready to be placed for adoption. Mom is now, Millie, and her two boys are, Benny and Joon. They have all three tested negative for FIV/FeLV. They are scheduled to be spayed/neutered on July 5th.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

TRUVY: Truvy is the smallest of the foster kittens I am fostering for Port City Cat Rescue. She is a tiny tortie kitten. I noticed she was not playing like she normally does but was still eating. Still, I knew she was not acting normal. She felt very warm to me, so I took her temperature and it was 105.2. Normal is around 101. She spent four days in the hospital on I.V. fluids and getting some meds to bring her temperature down. Her blood work showed no reason for this fever and she also tested FIV/FeLV negative. The vet said some will get fevers of unknown origin, but we will test her for a blood borne illness called, Haemobartonellosis. She is back at the sanctuary and doing well.

J.D.: J.D. has also come down with a fever of 105.1, so he has been at the E.R. vet since yesterday and remains there tonight. He will come home tomorrow. He tested negative for FIV/FeLV, but he is slightly anemic. This may be haemobartonellosis and we will have him, and Truvy, tested for it by our regular vet. His temperature came down in a matter of hours, versus Truvy taking a couple of days.

JD

Grayson

GRAYSON: Our local stray, Grayson, had some health issues, but is much improved, friendly, and ready to be neutered. He will be neutered on the 5th and finally brought to the sanctuary once he is healed. He is a sweet guy.

AMAZON WISH LIST: We have updated our Amazon wish list, we have added the Seresto flea collars, and some other much needed food items. Also, when you shop via Smile.Amazon.com you can select Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate a percentage of the sales to us. It’s a very easy way to help.

April 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Fans!

The weather is starting to finally cooperate a little bit and the grounds are starting to dry, but it is still very wet at the sanctuary and that is making it more difficult to do the much-needed work of clearing our land. We are trying to find someone that could do the clearing, and leveling, of the property so we can decide on how we can make an even better facility for our cats.

BAKE SALE: Don’t forget our upcoming bake sale on April 13th from 11a.m.- 3p.m. at Petco on Youree Drive, Shreveport. These bake sales are very important in helping raise much needed funds for our cats, as well as educating the public about FIV/FeLV.

VETERINARY ISSUES/UPDATES:

FINN: Finn had his follow-up with our vet on the 25th and he continues to improve. The vet decreased his Prednisolone from 3.5 ml, down to 2.0 ml. We are pleased with his progress and watch him closely for any changes to this positive outcome.

MITTENS: Mittens, the cat that fractured her canine, doesn’t show any signs of infection or other negative issues as a result of the fracture. We are happy about this since many cats end up getting sinus infections, or need a root canal, after a tooth fracture. We will still bring her in to have the vet recheck the tooth to make sure there is no hidden problem.

NATASHA: Natasha, the cat with a spot she kept licking that developed staph is better. She does not need further treatment at this point.

MAMA: Mama kitty is a sweet, about 11 or 12-year-old, Calico, that is not FIV/FELV positive, developed, or possibly hadn’t completely healed from, a urinary tract infection. The last time we had her treated she had a great deal of blood in her urine, and some crystals. I heard her crying when she went to use the litter box and noticed there was not a lot of urine present, and she made multiple attempts. Since I am very familiar with the signs, I immediately took her back to our vet. An ultrasound revealed a large bladder stone and her bladder walls were very inflamed. She needed surgery, which cost us $1200, to have the stone removed. Fortunately, the pathology revealed it was not a cancerous stone, but was material the same as the crystals. She is on the prescription urinary diet. She has her follow-up on April 2nd to have her staples removed.

Urinary tract infections (URIs) are not an uncommon issue for older cats and usually requires the more senior cats needing a change in diet. When a cat develops crystals in their urine it can lead to a dangerous blockage, and it is painful for the cat. Therefore, water is critical for cats. We keep multiple water fountains, as well as water bowls, throughout our cat houses. It’s another reason we are working hard on finding a better diet, preferably NOT a dry kibble diet. It is more difficult since we have 66 cats we are caring for, but in the long run it’s all about the cats and we will do what is needed for them.

FLEA CONTROL:  We are still trying to get Seresto Flea collars for all our Yogie cats. Someone recently purchased three off our Amazon Wish list, and we thank you for that. We have 66 cats at the sanctuary and hope you will help us get collars for ALL the cats. These collars last for 8 months and that makes it around $7 a month for preventative, versus the pricier topical flea meds we get at our vets.to death. Prevention is key. If you can help us get these items, then please let us know. We want all our animals to be comfortable and parasite free.

March 2019 Newsletter

Hello Yogie Fans!

Well, we are still a bit behind on getting the outside catio built for the new cat house. The weather has been crazy. We get a day, here and there, that isn’t raining, but it isn’t enough to be able to build due to the wet grounds. In fact, the new building is settling more than expected, so it messed up the door closing properly. Gemco did come out to work on the leveling, then it started raining too much to finish. They did get it level enough to make the door a little better, but we must wait for the ground to dry more and they will put some better leveling pads under the building for us. They said it is common to need releveling on larger buildings, but there has been far too much rain over the past couple of months and that is delaying things. Hopefully we can get the outdoor catio done for our cats to enjoy a safe, outdoor, playground.

Finn, the cat with the ruptured eardrum is responding well to steroids, which is a very good thing. But, how to prevent something like this from happening again is the issue that concerns us. There was no trauma that caused this, but apparently, he has waxy ears and chronic infections that he doesn’t present with. The vet said there is no approved ear meds for cats, and we were hoping there was something preventative we could do to help keep his ears clean. We are researching this issue with some vet schools.

Just a couple of nights ago another cat, Mittens, went to jump up on a nightstand and somehow missed. She apparently hit her mouth on the side of the stand and fractured a canine. She was brought into the bedroom where Finn is recuperating to watch her. She was acting like she had something stuck in her mouth and kept pawing at it, but she didn’t act like she was in pain or distress. We did get her to our vet the following morning. The thing we worry about is any infection developing in the pulp of the tooth and causing severe sinus infections. We have seen this happen. We will watch closely to ensure there is nothing serious happening. If there is any worsening, they will remove the tooth.

We had to get another cat, Natasha, seen for a sore she kept licking to the point it caused her to develop staph on the sore. She is one of our oldest cats, at about 16 years old. She is otherwise healthy for her age.

The biggest issue with cats is missing signs of illness. Since they are such experts at hiding illness and injury it presents us with more serious medical needs when they do present. We realize its nature’s way of preservation for the animal, but it sure makes it difficult for us. We want only the best for them.

FLEA CONTROL: Louisiana is horrible for flea problems. Even our veterinarians agree that many of the preventatives are no longer effective and new treatments are coming out. We usually wait a while before trying any of the new releases due to any possible side effects. We treat the property with food grade diatomaceous earth, which is very safe and effective, but messy. With all the rain we have had we are not able to treat the property right now. We treat all year long. Fleas have a cycle of the eggs, larva, and adult, that all need to be killed, and that is over a period of time. Meanwhile, we are trying to get Seresto Flea collars for all our Yogie cats. They vary in price, but we are doing our research for the best price. We have 66 cats we are caring for. Our vet highly recommends the collars or Bravecto 3 month topical for the cats. Both are pricey options, but not as costly as flea related illnesses that can often lead to death. Prevention is key. If you can help us get these items, then please let us know. We want all our animals to be comfortable and parasite free.

SPONSORSHIP: Sponsorship is a very important way to help our animals. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals.
