September 2020 Newsletter
Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!
We are happy to report that we made it through Hurricane Laura without any physical damage to our property, or that of any of our volunteer staff. We did lose power at the sanctuary, but that has now been restored and we are grateful for the teams from all over the country, and Canada, that helped make it possible. The temperatures are extreme this week, so the quick response is even more appreciated.
Sadly, someone stole our generator and we are working on getting another. When we do that, we will build a caged enclosure to secure it in, so it does not happen again.

Gatsby
GATSBY: We are sad to report that, despite so much excellent medical care given, we just could not save Gatsby. He fought the good fight, but he was just too immune compromised to recover. We made the kindest, and difficult, decision to let him. On August 20th, He was held by our Director while he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He knew love. We want to thank Dr. Sally Daville, of Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic for her kindness in working so hard to save Gatsby.
LUCIA: On August 7th we brought in a foster, by request of a local vet who wanted the injured cat in a safe place to heal. He provided all the vet care on her. We named her, Lucia (Lou Chia). Lucia is a beautiful, white, cat that a kind lady found near a dumpster at a local nursing home. She was badly malnourished and had a broken jaw. This lady brought her to Southern Hills Animal Hospital in Shreveport and Dr. Brad Everson worked with her. The broken jaw was aligned well enough on its own to not require surgery, so they asked if we could take her to help bring her back to health. She is ear tipped, which meant she had been spayed under a Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program. She was wearing a collar, so we were all a bit confused. She is also very friendly. Lucia has gained three pounds in the short time she has been with us at the sanctuary. She had severe ear mites, which we were hoping was the cause of her hearing issues, but it is not. Lucia is totally deaf. As a result, we make sure we tap our foot when entering the cat building so she can feel our presence. She is sweet, and playful. We will work on getting her adopted to a home without small children, or other pets that could risk reinjuring her jaw.
Our Director is going to be having surgery on the 15th and that will put some minor limitations on her, but it will not interfere with the care that our animals receive, and she will be at the Paws in the Park event in October. She is not thrilled to be having any medical procedures since she hates limitations of any kind. Who does? Please keep her in your prayers.
CLAIRE AND KITTENS: Claire and her kittens are doing well. The kittens turn 3 months old on September 2nd. Oliver, the orange kitten, has been adopted and is thriving in his new home. He has bonded with the husband. The other four are ready to go and we have interest in them. We are trying to raise the funds to get them all spayed and neutered. We will miss them but will be happy to find their forever homes.
FUNDRAISERS: We truly have no idea when we will be allowed to do our bake sales, or other, fundraisers, at this point. We are going to figure out ways to do our events outside of the usual venues that we have, but still make our fans and supporters feel safe. We are desperate to get our funds built up and need to do something quickly.
SPONSORSHIP: Sponsorship is a great way to help support our cats. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for. Please consider sponsoring one of our animals. The cats really need you.
Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat, but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.
You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.
We are spending about $1500 a month on food and litter.
CRITICAL NEEDS: Right now, we need a great deal of help with items such as cat litter and food. We really need Scoopable cat litter, no lightweight as they can present a dangerous ingestion and blockage issue, and we use Friskies canned pate, Fancy Feast canned pate, and Purina Naturals dry food. We have an Amazon wish list that makes it easier to order, or you can order any other way that is convenient to you. If you donate cash, check, or PayPal, we can purchase the items as well.
AMAZON WISH LIST: We have updated our Amazon wish list; we have added much needed food items and cat litter. Also, when you shop via Smile.Amazon.com you can select Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate a percentage of the sales to us. It is an extremely easy way to help.

You can also choose to pay the fees by selecting the Friends and Family option in PayPal ensuring we would receive the entire amount of your donation. Our PayPal is: yogieandfriends@hotmail.com
CHEWY: Do you shop for pet food and supplies at Chewy. Well, we are a pet partner with Chewy.com. Enter the Chewy website from the link on the Yogie and Friends website and we will get a portion of the sales. This is a great way to help our cats and we hope you will select us as your charity. Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!
The current situation regarding the coronavirus has taken a toll on so many. We realize we are not the only rescue struggling to make ends meet, but we are unique in the fact that our cats are permanent residents, so it takes a bigger toll on our bank account. Honestly, with the controls on fundraisers, which we understand the caution, and no other real source of steady income, it is stressful. We are trying to get creative with fundraising, but many of our fans are not on social media, which seems to be the way these days, and some do not even have email to send. We are looking into an online auction, but that is something we really must work hard on to coordinate to be successful.
We know we can do it. We have 66 cats, and the 5 kittens, but we have some cats that may be of interest for adoption outside of the sanctuary, and if, and when, a good adopter does come along, we have adopted a cat out.
We thank our friends and fans for helping us through.
TIGGER: We share yet another, incredibly sad, loss. Many of you have visited and had the opportunity to see our black leopard, Tigger, in person. We are sad to report that Tigger crossed the rainbow bridge on July 6th. He would have turned 19 years old on July 29th. We are thankful for the years we had with him, but our hearts will miss his earthly presence.
GATSBY: Gatsby is one of our FIV+ cats. He has been with us since sometime in 2015. Over the past couple of months, we have noticed him losing weight. Nothing too concerning at first, but over the past month it has gotten worse. When we first noticed weight loss the vet put him on a long-term antibiotic for any possible blood borne parasite. The lab work showed some signs that warranted it. But this did not resolve his problems. Some more in-depth lab work was sent out to the lab and we got results in showing a treatable issue. He has been placed on Azithromycin and responding well. He is currently at Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic on Airline Drive, in Bossier City. He has been there over a week this time. If you would like to help with his vet bill, you can call a donation directly in by calling 318-747-5747. However, if you need a donation receipt, then you can mail a check or money order directly to: Yogie and Friends, 128 Fob Lane, Frierson, LA 71027. If you use PayPal, then you can use the receipt they give you for the donation tax purposes. Our PayPal is yogieandfriends@hotmail.com. You can help us defray the fees if you choose to donate via the Family and Friends option on PayPal and it gives you the chance to pay the fees.
CLAIRE AND KITTENS: Claire and the five kittens are doing very well. We had an issue with two kittens having high fevers, which is known as “Fever of Unknown Origin.” Our vet put all on an antibiotic as a precaution, and the first set of vaccinations was delayed for a week. They did have their first series of shots started on August 4th, and all five tested negative for FIV/FeLV. We have some adoption interest in them and hopefully soon we will have all five in outstanding, forever, homes. We will miss them though. Claire will be scheduled to be spayed in about another month. We will place her up for adoption as well.
FUNDRAISERS: We are still unable to do our usual bake sale fundraisers, so we are working on some other, creative, ways to raise the much-needed funds for our cats.
SPONSORSHIP: Sponsorship is a great way to help support our cats. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. July 2020
Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!
We hope you are all doing well during these most unusual times.
We never enjoy sharing sad news, but the nature of what we do here at the sanctuary, we realize there will be sad news to report.
FRAZIER: Our sweet boy, Frazier, crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 26 June 2020. Frazier had developed a large mass, and several smaller, masses on his spleen. It also appeared there was other organ involvement. Since he was FIV+, surgery was not a good, safe, option in this situation, he was declining rapidly, so we made the hard decision, to let him go gently. This is always such a difficult thing for us to do, but our vets agreed that it was the right thing in this case.

CLAIRE: The sweet little tortie kitten we found on a Bossier City street, gave birth to six kittens, on June 2nd. Sadly, one of the kittens died shortly after birth. The kittens are doing amazingly well. This is a lot for a young mom. We lovingly refer to the five babies as, The Weebles. We do not know how that name caught on, but it has stuck. Claire and the Weebles, have a wellness check with Dr. Daville, at Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic on July 2nd. Then we will begin them on a watered down canned, Royal Canin Mother and Baby Cat mousse. Once they begin on this food, it will take the stress off mom keeping up with nursing needs. The kitten sizes are quite varied, and it is a lot of fun to see their progress. Two kittens are already spoken for, so that makes us happy. Three we have named already.

THE YOGIE POPULATION: We currently have 66 cats in our care at the sanctuary, at both our Frierson, and Bossier, locations. This does not include Claire’s five kittens. Our population varies in age. We have several geriatric cats. More than half of our cats are 11 years and older, up to 18 years old. Not all our cats are FIV+. In fact, less are FIV+. But, as the cats age, we begin to see issues such as kidney failure. This is more common in geriatric cats. But, with such a large population, you can expect to see an increase in losses. We often hear comments from people like “Wow, you have had a bunch die.” Or, “Why are so many cats dying?” Well, it is kind of frustrating to hear these comments. It is not because they do not receive quality care, it is because, well, many come to us with medical issues, or it is just that they are older and they just, die. Either way, we know we will face the dread of loss. None of us live forever, and it is something we will face more often than we would like. But we are glad that we provide them a quality life while they are with us. No matter how long, or short, a time it is.
FUNDRAISERS: At this time, we still have no idea when we can do in person fundraisers. We miss seeing our fans in person, and we desperately need the funds for our animals. Our needs remain, so it means getting creative. We will do some Facebook fundraising, which we understand not all our fans and supporters can participate in. We have several friends who are not on-line or use any social media. That includes email, so it is difficult to keep them in the loop. But we do our best.
A way you can help us through these difficult times, and throughout the year, is through sponsorship. Sponsorship provides us a continuous source of income. If everyone of our cats had a sponsor, then it would ensure that we would have a regular source of funds for our cats. We hope you would consider sponsoring one, or more, of our sweet cats.
SPONSORSHIP: We are beginning to get sponsors for our cats. This is a great way to help support our cats. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals.
