December 2020 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!

December has come in like a lion! It was 25 degrees here this morning at our location and being Louisiana, it is not easy for most people, and of course, the animals. Rest assured we were ready for the cold and the cats are safe and warm. We even work hard to ensure our fine, feral, friends have some warm, safe, shelters from the elements.

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are looking forward to a safe, and happy holiday season. The cats really need our fans more than ever this holiday season with the lack of fundraising capabilities right now. It has not been easy. Our bank account is at a critically low level and we still have food, cat litter, and vet bills, to pay for. None of this is possible without our incredibly loyal fans.

GIVING TUESDAY: Today begins the Giving Tuesday campaign. We do have a campaign currently running on Facebook, but we realize not all our fans are on Facebook. That does not mean you cannot donate to help our cats. The easiest way to contribute to our cause is via PayPal at yogieandfriends@hotmail.com and choosing the Family and Friends option so we receive 100% of your donation. We hope you can help.

VET BILLS: VET BILLS: If you would like to help with our vet bill, you can call Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic in Bossier City, Louisiana, directly at 318-747-5747.

Theo (Tayo) has been in the hospital since November 20th. His blood work showed he was severely anemic to the point he required a blood transfusion. Some of his lab work has returned unremarkable, so another special lab was sent out and we have not received the results yet. The timing with the holiday has delayed some of the results. He has responded well with antibiotics and the transfusion. He is eating well. If the test results come back as the doctor suspects, then he will continue antibiotics for another two weeks. If not, then he will need a bone marrow biopsy. Since he appears to be responding to the meds, we are hopeful he will not need the biopsy.

Paisley, another cat, who we originally were told by a vet that asked us to take her as being both FIV/FeLV positive and retested negative, is in the hospital right now. She had an enlarged belly and X-rays showed she might have an obstruction. The vet did exploratory surgery and found no obstruction, other than some fecal matter and a great deal of gas, but otherwise clear. She does have a systemic infection of unknown origin, and, has a history of Toxoplasmosis, so, she is now on an antibiotic cocktail and waiting for clearance to return to the sanctuary.

Sebastian, one of our older, non FIV/FeLV cats, is an early stage kidney failure cat, who had to go into the hospital for fluids due to vomiting and not eating. His kidney values were bad this time. He is not on meds three times a day for the rest of his life. He will be 16 years old in March, so, this is not totally unexpected. It is still incredibly sad for us.

Lily, another non FIV/FeLV cat, went at the same time as Sebastian for vomiting and weight loss. She also showed with a systemic infection, was placed on antibiotics, but also showed a thickening of her intestines and belly. She has been placed on Tylosin for the rest of her life. She will be 15 years old in March.

Some of the issues coming up with the cats are not unusual, geriatric, issues. Still, it is a hard thing for us to see happening, and it is also a costly thing. We are currently looking at more than $3500 in vet bills, and no fundraisers currently scheduled due to the coronavirus restrictions. We know we will get through it.

CHEWY: We have set up our Chewy wish list and here is the link to order items off the wish list for our cats.

https://www.chewy.com/g/yogie-and-friends-fiv-cat-sanctuary_b66609597?fbclid=IwAR2PutvdDsL2hKM9UNmkJqplrsvJtYewWZd7kPqqeY6FUtXoYpzOA-mHq-Q

SPONSORSHIP:  Sponsorship is a great way to help support our cats. By sponsoring one of the FIV cats you will be providing food, medical care, and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for. Please consider sponsoring one of our animals.  The cats really need you.

Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.

You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.

We are spending about $1500 a month on food and litter.

CRITICAL NEEDS: Right now, we need a great deal of help with items such as cat litter and food. We really need Scoopable cat litter, no lightweight as they can present a dangerous ingestion and blockage issue, and we use Friskies canned pate, Fancy Feast canned pate, and Purina Naturals dry food. We have an Amazon wish list that makes it easier to order, or you can order any other way that is convenient to you. If you donate cash, check, or PayPal, we can purchase the items as well.

AMAZON WISH LIST: We have updated our Amazon wish list; we have added much needed food items and cat litter. Also, when you shop via Smile.Amazon.com you can select Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate a percentage of the sales to us. It is an extremely easy way to help.

PAYPAL: Did you know you can do automatic monthly donations to Yogie and Friends via PayPal? This is an easy and effective way to help our fundraising for the animals. You can also choose to pay the fees by selecting the Friends and Family option in PayPal ensuring we would receive the entire amount of your donation. Our PayPal is: yogieandfriends@hotmail.com

November 2020 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!

November is here! Where has this year gone? It has been a very strange, and challenging, year to say the least. We hope this update finds all of our friends well.

PAWS IN THE PARK: We want to thank Realtor’s to the Rescue for hosting another, very fun and successful, Paws in the Park. We had the opportunity to catch up with some of our rescue friends we don’t often get a chance to, meet old friends, and, new ones alike. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the event, and, for Yogie and Friends. We greatly appreciate you all.

CHEWY: Chewy has finally created a way for rescues to do a wish list with them. We have set up our wish list and here is the link to order items off the wish list for our cats.

VET BILLS: We had a couple of vet emergencies, which wracked up bills of more than $1400. We realize it is part of the cost of doing what we do, but we sure could use your help to replenish the coffers if you can help in anyway.

October 2020 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie and Friends Fans!

We are happy to report that we made it through Hurricane Laura without any physical damage to our property, or that of any of our volunteer staff. We did lose power at the sanctuary, but that has now been restored and we are grateful for the teams from all over the country, and Canada, that helped make it possible. The temperatures were extreme, so the quick response was even more appreciated.

Sadly, someone stole our generator and we are working on getting another. When we do that, we will build a caged enclosure to secure it in, so it does not happen again.

Two kittens adopted!

CLAIRE AND KITTENS: Claire and her kittens are doing well. Sven and Rudy were adopted by two of our volunteers. We have known this sweet couple for well over 12 years and they are great pet people. The two kittens are doing great. We still have Bonnie and Yakov looking for forever homes. Claire, Yakov, and Bonnie are scheduled for spay/neuter.

Mama kitty after surgery

MAMA KITTY: Mama had to have surgery for a cyst in one of her mammary glands. It was removed and she is doing well. The pathology came back, and it was not a cancer! We are incredibly happy about that. Of course, the surgery costs hit us again, but we receive a particularly good discount and that helps a lot.

FUNDRAISERS: Sadly, some places are still limiting our capabilities for doing fundraisers. We desperately need to do some but have not found the right venue that will allow it. We are checking with some places that have worked with us in the past to host the bake sales. These have brought in up to $2400 and we truly need to get some income generated. We have looked at online auctions, but the problem ends up being how to get the item to the winner. We are looking at raffles as well, but they do not often do well. We will be participating in the Paws in the Park on the 24th at Riverview Park in Shreveport. That is always a nice, outdoor, event for us. We look forward to that. But we are working hard on ideas.
