Greetings Yogie Fans!
The heat here in Northwest Louisiana, and all over the country, has been particularly brutal for us. Our air conditioners are working overtime, and the electric bills are not helping. But we are doing what we can to make sure our cats, and their humans, are safe. We even make sure the community cats we care for have a constant supply of fresh, clean, water, out of the sun. It is a constant task, but they are worth it. Please be safe out there.
KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS: Attention Kroger Shoppers. We have been part of the Kroger Community Rewards program for well over 15 years, but they made some changes to their program, and we want to update our fans who happen to shop at Kroger Grocery Stores. Flynn
FLYNN: had a very prominent third eyelid showing, and the conjunctiva was extremely inflamed. Of course, this always happens on the weekend, but it was not an emergency type situation since, the Director knows the usual signs of conjunctivitis and had leftover meds from other kittens with this condition. She began treating him and he was brought to the vet on Monday morning the 25th and the diagnosis was confirmed. He continued with the meds she had been using as well as oral Clavamox. He went back on the 28th for his follow-up ultrasound and there is no free-flowing abdominal fluid consistent with FIP, but the vet did add another med for his eyes. He also developed diarrhea, which he has never had before. We believe it is just from the Clavamox since it is one of the side effects. He is eating, drinking, and, playing some. His fecal came back negative for parasites, but the vet wants to send a fecal PCR to test for certain bacteria or viruses that can also cause diarrhea. Since he is a small kitten, we want to ensure he gets the proper diagnosis. His eye is taking a bit longer to heal, but it can take as long as three to four weeks to heal. We just want him well, and then get him to another rescue that will adopt him out for us.
Egon
EGON: Egon has been in post medication observation for FIP, and he had his 30-day labs done on the 28th. There was an increase in one value that concerned us, but the vet said it is nothing to worry about and he is doing very well. He will have another lab done in 30 days, then 24 days from that, and if they remain clear he is considered healed! Paws and claws crossed!
ENYA: Sweet little Enya had started to isolate, and then we noticed she was not running to the dishes when we fed. On Wednesday, the Director put her in the medical isolation condo to better monitor her. Good thing she did. Enya was acting depressed, not eating, and we found she had vomited in the condo. On Thursday she did nibble some food, but not enough and we noticed she had vomited again. In many instances if there is undigested food, we know it may be a different issue. Since it was more bile like and tinted with blood, we knew it was something needing more vet attention. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis on Friday and was hospitalized. We were a little surprised since they receive a quality food, and she is not even a year old. It is usually seen more in older animals. There is no cure for this, just

supportive care when it flares up. She is on IV fluids and will hopefully return to the sanctuary after the weekend stay.
As of this typing, our vet bill is $1292.83, but it does not include Enya’s current hospitalization.

WHAT IS FIP? Feline Infectious Peritonitis, FIP, is a corona-based virus. This is a feline specific illness and not contagious to humans. This is one diagnosis that those of us in rescue dread because it has always been a death sentence. Until now. There are no guarantees with any medications, but this one is promising. Here is a link with the best explanation of what FIP is, and the program we are using for these two babies.
CRITICAL FOOD AND LITTER NEEDS: The shelves at pet stores, and other stores in general, have been quite bear with the critical supplies we need. Our priorities are, scoopable cat litter (no lightweight as it is not safe for sick, or young, cats), Friskies Pate’ canned food, Royal Canin Kitten slices in gravy (Our young cats and kittens eat this best), Royal Canin Dry Kitten, Purina Complete Dry, and Purina Naturals. We do not use grain free as it is not safe or recommended by our veterinarians. We also use Purina Fortiflora, which is a probiotic that aids in the health of the cats. Happy July Yogie Fans!
It has been brutally hot, and so early in the season, which means the air conditioners are working overtime, and electric prices are skyrocketing. We are making sure the air conditioning units stay in good working order. It has been brutal!
BUBBA: We had noticed that our sweet Bubba was losing weight and slowing down some. We brought him to our vet and the news was not what we expected. We realize that being FIV positive he would be at a higher risk for illnesses that would be harder to fight, but the vet said he was loaded with masses in his abdomen, kidney, and liver. We were not going to put him through a long, painful, treatment that would not even extend his life, and worse, not have a decent quality of life. We were not going to do that to him, so we made the painful decision to let him go gently and not suffer anymore. Cats are experts at hiding illness, so they are often too far advanced when they are finally diagnosed. Bubba loved to hug. He loved everyone he met, and they loved him. He will be missed. R.I.P. Bubba, 3 Aug 2012 – 16 June 2022.
FACILITY LOCATION: Yogie and Friends is a corporation in good standing with the Secretary of State Louisiana. You must be a corporation before you can even be considered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the IRS. We have been both since 2000. Our head office, as well as cat housing, is in Frierson, Louisiana. However, we are legally able to have locations throughout the state of Louisiana if we so choose. We do not have the time, nor resources, to do that. We could never man other facilities. We do have several volunteers that foster cats for us throughout the Shreveport-Bossier area, which is a widespread practice with ALL the local cat and dog rescues in our community. This is a tremendous help and makes it possible to save more animals as a result. If you ever considered fostering for us, or other rescues, we highly recommend it. Sadly, there are no ordinances regarding cats, which is why we see so many stray/feral in our community and puts a burden on rescues who trap/neuter/release (TNR) these community cats. These community cats do serve a good function by controlling the pest population, but we need more, well managed, TNRd colonies.
FLYNN: On June 19th, while sitting on the couch drinking coffee, the familiar sound of a tiny kitten was outside the director’s door. She went outside to find, what she hoped was not, a tiny black kitten run by. It was super-fast, and she was not able to catch it. The kitten showed up again the next day and after sitting in the 100-degree heat with a drop trap set, she managed to catch the kitten. He was not aggressive, but very scared. He weighed one pound, which the vets usually estimate one month per pound. He may have been a little older than that since he was very able. She gave him a Dawn bath for fleas and noticed tape worm coming out of him. She treated him for the usual intestinal parasites, but he was too small for the flea and tape worm treatment we have for cats and kittens. He saw the vet on the 27th and received an injection for tape worm. He is too young to start vaccines, but he will in the next week or two. We hope to have him placed for adoption through one of our other rescue groups that do adoptions. We named him, Flynn.
EGON: Egon has been officially cleared to enter the 84-day observation phase for his FIP treatment. We never thought this day would get here. He had a scary day this past week. He was not eating and started isolating. We also noticed he had diarrhea, which is something you do not ever want to see, but more so in an FIP cat. The vet gave him an anti-nausea shot to stimulate his appetite, and sub cutaneous fluids. We have Propectalin to treat diarrhea and he got two doses of that. The next day he acted like nothing was wrong, was eating well, and even playing with the new kitten, Flynn. They have become buddies. This has been an expensive, and exhausting, process. We pray Egon makes it through observation and no relapse. He will have blood work run on day 30, 60, and 84. His temperature and weight will also continue to be monitored. This is a good report.
PIA: Pia had been losing weight, and her heart rate was high and slightly erratic. She was diagnosed hyperthyroid. She is on meds and doing very well.
SASHA: Sasha, our only Feline Leukemia (FeLV) positive cat, had been vomiting and acting like she was in pain. She had severe dental problems and on June 30th had seven teeth removed, and a good dental cleaning. We kept her secluded in the medical hold at the sanctuary for a day, and she gets pain meds till July 3rd. After the overnight in the medical cage, she is doing very well.
With help from our friends, we were catching up on our bill, but it is back up to $600. This is the price of rescue. We are grateful that our vet gives us a very generous discount.

Happy June Yogie Fans!
Yogie and Friends celebrated 22 years as a sanctuary on 26 May 2022. We could not have done it without our fans, and we appreciate you. Thank you so much! Here is to another 22 years!
BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND ISSUES: The roof over the pergola section of the newer cat building has been damaged during recent storms. Our building guy should be by this week to assess what needs to be done. We said we would like to replace the fiberglass style cover to metal so it holds up better. We are not letting the smaller cats, such as Egon and littermates out of the building onto the catio because the holes are large enough for them to escape. We do not want that happening. Fortunately, our carpenter is an awesome guy who never charges ridiculous prices for labor. Unfortunately, he has no control over the material prices, which have gotten out of control.
MEDICAL ISSUES: The previous few weeks have been rough. Just when we get slightly ahead, we get slammed. When you have sixty-nine cats in the sanctuary, it is bound to happen. It just hurts financially, but more so to see the cats that have illness, or injury. But we press on for them!
EGON: Egon had his 60-day labs, and they look good. The vet also did an ultrasound and said there is no free fluid in his abdomen, which is one of the Wet FIP symptoms. His urine was also normal, so we are on the right track with him. The admins of the treatment program do not feel he is gaining weight fast enough, but he looks good to us, and he is eating well, and, playing. They recommend we ask the vet to do a body score on him and we will next week. The final 34 days of his pills cost $850, then there is the cost of labs and vet visits. All part of the process. He has another set of labs on day eighty, which will be June 17th. If those labs are good, he will finish his medicine on June 21st and should be cleared for observation. Wow! We never thought this day would get here. Especially after the heartache of losing his sister, Miracle. Observation is also a period of 84 days, labs, and if those continue to look good, after the 84-day observation period, he will be considered cured! That will be sometime in September. We pray he gets through and no relapse!
LUCIA: Lucia, the deaf cat who had major abdominal surgery on April 21st has healed well and is back to her normal, playful, self.
PETE: Pete, went in for his two-week glucose curve and his numbers will still high, so the vet increased his insulin to two units. Hopefully, this is his level, but we will not know until his next Glucose curve. We feel it is doing some good even now since his behavior is more of the old Pete we know.
CHLOE: Our nineteen-year-old cat, Chloe, who is also our first domestic cat rescue for Yogie back in 2003, was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She must get rechecked after two weeks on meds to see if she is at the proper levels.
We were catching up on our bill, but it is uncommon to have medical issues with an aging population of cats. We sure could use a break though. We still have a balance remaining of more than $2400 at our vet.

PAYPAL: PayPal has a program where you can do automatic monthly donations to Yogie and Friends. This is an easy and effective way to help our fundraising for the animals. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. We are spending about $4500 a month on food and litter alone. Then we have vet bills and other incidentals that come up creating an immediate need.
