May 2008 News
Greetings!
May is here and with that the hotter temperatures will soon be upon us.
I am glad to say that even though we couldn’t open the first Saturday in April because of the rain we did have a good season opening on the following Saturday. The weather was amazing and comfortable. Our visitors really enjoyed themselves and so did the Yogie staff.
Our event at Buffalo Wild Wings was a fun success. We met some amazing people who visited Yogie and Friends as a result of meeting us at the event. That is our goal. Get the info out and educating people about these amazing cats. Thanks to the staff at Buffalo Wild Wings.
Our education building has made some major strides this past month. We have all the doors installed and we have been able to use the building since we’ve opened. There are just a few things left to do and then we plan on using this building to hold small fundraisers such as birthday parties. We get so many requests for birthday parties that this will be another way of raising funds for our animals. The building is bright and cheerful and even has a small gift area. We have a few minor things to do like finishing the interior trim, some drywall mudding, a little painting, and odds and ends. We plan on having a dedication for the building when it is done. And it will be an opportunity for us to thank ALL those who made this building possible. Probably sometime in May.
There are two upcoming events we are participating in this month:
May 3rd, Belk’s Charity Day
May 17th, Regal Cinema, Bossier Boardwalk from 1 – 6 P.M. for the opening of the Movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Volunteer of the month: We want to thank Kyle Monroe for his work on the education building this past month. He put a lot of his time off from work to do this for us and we appreciate it.
If you are interested in volunteering with us then please contact us. Come visit us at the sanctuary and see what we are all about. This is a 100% volunteer driven organization, which means, nobody gets paid for the work they do. We love the animals and what we are doing for them. There are many different volunteer opportunities such as tour guide, admissions, lawn care, fundraising, etc. A little something for everyone. But, please know this. There is absolutely no contact with the animals. So, if you think this is the place for you, then let us know.
Check out the programs being offered at Yogie and Friends. There is the Yogie and Friends Membership Program , Sponsorship Program, and Corporate Sponsorship Program . These are programs that help us support the animals and another way that you can get involved. Program packages are available here on our website.
Go Green with our ink jet and cell phone recycling program.
We have several programs for you to help our animals: www.magfundraising.com, www.igive.org, www.networkforgood.org, www.goodsearch.com, just to name a few. They are all listed here on our website.
There has been a change to the Kroger Share Card Program. This program is no longer in place. Kroger will now have the Neighbor to Neighbor program and we are still waiting for the materials to come in for our supporters. This will work in basically the same way the share card did except there will be a letter with a bar code identifying Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice. You will bring this letter with you to your Kroger store and hand it to the cashier when you check out. When they scan this bar code it will enter Yogie and Friends as your charity onto your Kroger Plus card. This way you will only have to present the plus card and not that and the share card. It will be much easier to have just the one card to remember. The only thing is that you will have to enroll your charity every year, but that’s just a small step when you are helping these great animals. Keep watching our website as we will have this available as soon as we get the info.
Please remember to spay and neuter your pets. We have been receiving numerous calls for fostering or adopting domestic cats. The Ferrell cat problem is really bad in this area and this can be better controlled with just spaying and neutering these animals.
Also, do what you can to prevent flea and ticks causing serious illnesses to your animals. They deserve your care and kindness.
Remember the heat is on. It’s only May and it will get much worse. Please make sure you provide all your animals, inside and outside, fresh, clean, and cool water. Provide good shade shelter for those animals outside. NEVER leave your animals outside in the hot car. Even parked in the shade temperatures rise to well over 100 degrees. Just don’t do it. Even a short trip to the grocery store can prove deadly for an animal left in the car. Leave them in the comfort of their home while you run your errands.
Be good to your animals. Be good to people! Be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
