April 2022
Greetings Yogie Fans!
April is here, and so is spring! Please be safe out there when the usual spring storms arrive.
We have an immediate need for help with two FIP kittens at the sanctuary. We are looking at a cost of $5000 – $6000 over the next few months with medicine and vet checks. See the following information. We want to try and save these two babies.
MIRACLE: Miracle (The black kitten from the Fantasy Four) was brought to the vet on March 7th to see if her bloodwork, and, an ultrasound of her abdomen, might reveal what is going on with her. Dr. Daville called the Director after the ultrasound and said she saw some granulomas in her intestines and asked if we wanted to have these biopsied. She was able to do this the same day we brought her in. So glad we did. It was a rough surgery for one so little. The vet said she did not like the feel of her intestines and how “squishy” they were. There was also some fluid that was indicative of FIP, Feline Infectious Peritonitis. FIP has always been a death sentence for cats. We have always dreaded this diagnosis over any other because we knew there was no cure for it and often it led to a terrible death for cats. BUT there is a drug showing some promise, so we entered Miracle into this program. It is an expensive process, but the more cats who successfully clear of FIP, the better for others. Much like cancer studies, it is more data towards cures.
So, little 2-pound 3-ounce Miracle was entered into the program. This was done even before the results of the pathology results came in because time was of the essence. Miracle had her first injection on March 10th. The program is 84 days of injections with, unfortunately, a large bore needle because the medicine is thick. It costs $80 per vial, and that lasts about 8 – 10 shots, but will change as she gains weight. Our director has been doing this out of her own pocket. She wants this baby to make it. Miracle has had twenty-two injections as of 31 March. She is gaining weight! Her eyes seem brighter. She is not playing yet, but she is alive and eating like a pig. Our director has also been buying her Royal Canin Kitten canned food because Miracle loves it, and it is excellent quality. Pray for Miracle to have her miracle. You can follow her progress on Facebook too.
EGON: Egon is the gray tabby from the Fantasy Four. On Tuesday 29 March, our director went to feed the cats, but little Egon, Miracle’s littermate, did not run to the feeding. He stayed put on the blanket under a bench. When the director picked him up, he felt warm. She took his temperature but did not get a complete temperature since he fought her and got away. But the temperature jumped to 103 immediately upon insertion of the thermometer. A normal temperature for cats is 101 – 102.5. She knew based on this, his inactivity, and general demeanor, that he was extremely ill. She immediately brought him to the vet. His temperature was 104.6, ultrasound showed fluid in his abdomen, and his bloodwork had some significant issues. He was also diagnosed with wet FIP like his sister, Miracle. Egon spent the night on fluids, and other, supportive medications. He came back to the sanctuary on Wednesday and received his first injection for FIP like Miracle gets. This is a real gut punch for us because this medicine is so expensive, and now TWO cats have it. We are getting the other two littermates checked as well.
We still have a vet bill because of this at Airline Animal Health and Surgery Clinic in Bossier City, Louisiana. 318-747-5747.
WHAT IS FIP? Feline Infectious Peritonitis, FIP, is a corona-based virus. This is a feline specific illness and not contagious to humans. This is one diagnosis that those of us in rescue dread because it has always been a death sentence. Until now. There are no guarantees with any medications, but this one is promising. Here is a link with the best explanation of what FIP is, and the program we are using for these two babies.
PEN RAFFLE: We will be having several raffle items up at Geek’d Con in August. This sugar skull pen is just one example of what we will have at our fundraiser booth.
CRITICAL FOOD AND LITTER NEEDS: The shelves at pet stores, and other stores in general, have been quite bare with the much needed supplies we need. Our priorities are, scoopable cat litter (no lightweight as it is not safe for sick, or young, cats), Friskies Pate’ canned food, Royal Canin Kitten slices in gravy (Miracle eats this best), Royal Canin Dry Kitten, Purina Complete Dry, and Purina Naturals. We do not use grain free as it is not safe or recommended by our veterinarians. We also use Purina Fortiflora, which is a probiotic that aids in the health of the cats. Especially those in FIP treatment. Any, and all, help with these items would be appreciated. You can check out our wish lists on Amazon and Chewy.

DONATION APPS: Donation apps are a fast way for you to donate much needed cash to Yogie and Friends. The following are the methods you can use to help the cats:
PayPal: yogieandfriends@hotmail.com
Venmo: YogieCats
CashApp: $YogieAndFriends
And as always, you can mail a check or money order to: Yogie and Friends, 128 Fob Lane, Frierson, LA 71027.
SPONSORSHIP: We often speak of our sponsorship program and right now we are really trying hard to get all our cats sponsored. Sponsorship is a wonderful way to help support our cats. By sponsoring one of our Yogie cats, you will be providing food, limited medical care (we know that medical bills can get extremely high and do not expect a sponsor to cover it. Unless they can, and want to), and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for.
Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat, but rest assured that all sponsor funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.
You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year. You can always contribute more. It all helps a great deal.
If you choose to sponsor a cat via PayPal or Venmo, please let us know the name of the cat you would like to sponsor. We are currently working on the cat biographies, we will feature out cats in a section called, Cat Corner, to tell you what we know about each cat. We do not always have much information about those in our care, but hopefully we can give you some useful information about them. We have names on the list for you to choose a cat to sponsor.
