July 2008 News
Greetings!
Well, summer is officially upon us and with that comes the typical seasonal issues. Storms, water and road safety, and of course, heat related care for your animals. Please be aware of these things. It’s hot out there!
We want to thank everyone who came out to Yogie and Friends to support our military personnel and their families during our Military Appreciation Day on June 14th. We had a steady crowd all day and it was a fun time for us all. It looks like we may even have some new volunteers from this day.
The grant we wrote for our privacy fence was turned down. We do understand the reasons for that and know that in the future we will be considered for other grants from that organization. But this now means we must work even harder to raise the money we need to build this much needed fence. We aren’t afraid of a little hard work and will press on towards that goal.
Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Program replaces the Kroger Share Card Program. The new Kroger program is now up and running. The advantage of the new program is now you only need to use the one card, your Kroger Plus Card. The Share card is obsolete. If you download the Kroger letter from our website and bring it with you the next time you shop at Kroger’s all you need to do is give the letter, with the bar code, to the cashier along with your Kroger Plus Card. The cashier will scan the bar code and it will be part of your Kroger Plus Card. One less step. The only downside is that it must be renewed annually. But, that is a small price to pay to help the cats. So, if you are a Kroger shopper please help the cats with this program.
Upcoming Events:
13 Sep 10 A.M. – 5 P.M. Grandparents Day.
Kids can bring their grandparents to Yogie and Friends on this day and the Grandparents will get in for FREE! Kids, don’t forget to bring your grandparent with you since you need an adult with you to visit Yogie and Friends.
20 Sep 11 A.M. – 4 P.M. Semi-Annual Bake Sale at Courtyard Coffee on Youree Drive in Shreveport.
Volunteer of the month: Our volunteer of the month is Anne Shinoskie. Anne helped work the Saturdays we needed an extra hand to help with admissions and visitors. It is greatly appreciated!
If you are interested in volunteering with us then please contact us. Come visit us at the sanctuary and see what we are all about. This is a 100% volunteer driven organization, which means, nobody gets paid for the work they do. We love the animals and what we are doing for them. There are many different volunteer opportunities such as tour guide, admissions, lawn care, fundraising, etc. A little something for everyone. But, please know this. There is absolutely no contact with the animals. So, if you think this is the place for you, then let us know.
Check out the programs being offered at Yogie and Friends. There is the Yogie and Friends Membership Program , Sponsorship Program, and Corporate Sponsorship Program . These are programs that help us support the animals and another way that you can get involved. Program packages are available here on our website.
Go Green with our ink jet and cell phone recycling program. Details are listed on our website.
We have several programs for you to help our animals: www.magfundraising.com, www.igive.org, www.networkforgood.org, www.goodsearch.com, just to name a few. They are all listed here on our website.
Please remember to spay and neuter your pets. We have been receiving numerous calls for fostering or adopting domestic cats. The Ferrell cat problem is really bad in this area and this can be better controlled with just spaying and neutering these animals.
Also, do what you can to prevent flea and ticks causing serious illnesses to your animals. They deserve your care and kindness.
Please make sure you provide all your animals, inside and outside, fresh, clean, and cool water. Provide good shade shelter for those animals outside. NEVER leave your animals outside in the hot car. Even parked in the shade temperatures rise to well over 100 degrees.
Please be safe this July 4th holiday. People who have no business handling fireworks will be out there doing so and it adds stress to the animals and danger to humans. We hear every year about serious injuries. Please use some common sense and care if you are going to be celebrating this way. We certainly want this to be an enjoyable time of fun and not something to look back on with sorrow. Safety, safety, safety!
Be good to your animals. Be good to people! Be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

April 2008 Sanctuary News
Happy April!
Time certainly passes quickly when you have so many things to do and that we do. We are preparing for our season opening on April 5th if the weather cooperates. It’s not looking too promising with the weather forecast, but we hope it will cooperate. Please keep a watch on our website for updates.
We have sad news to report. Our beloved Siberian tiger, Pooh Bear, died on March 27th. Pooh had a urinary tract infection that did not respond to antibiotics. His advanced age was determined to be a factor. Pooh Bear arrived at Yogie and Friends on 6 October 2001 along with our black leopard, Tigger. We are all very sad and will miss him dearly. We want to thank everyone who has sent their condolences and know they are appreciated.
Our semi-annual bake sale was a success. Thanks to our bakers extraordinaire, our volunteers, and of course, all the folks who came out to support this fun event.
Wild Wings for the Wild Ones at Buffalo Wild Wings on Youree Drive in Shreveport! When! Wednesday 2 April 2008 between 11 A.M. and 1 A.M. When you eat in or take out an order and use the coupon that is provided on our website (or our volunteers in front of Buffalo Wild Wings), then Yogie and Friends will receive 20% of the cost of your order. Pretty cool, huh? So, please come by and help the cats. We’d appreciate it.
We can still use some help with the education building. We thought we’d be finished before our season opening, but are at a standstill at the moment and it is just so close to being completed. If you are a carpenter and would be willing to volunteer your time and skills we would really appreciate it. We have one exterior door (which will require a small awning style roof), two interior doors, and a little molding and finish work to do and we’ll be ready to go. Please let us know if you can help.
Volunteers of the month: Thanks to our volunteers Brianna Volk and Mindy Manning who helped with our bake sale. Also a special thanks to those who baked the goodies. We appreciate it.
Check out the programs being offered at Yogie and Friends. There is the Yogie and Friends Membership Program , Sponsorship Program, and Corporate Sponsorship Program . These are programs that help us support the animals and another way that you can get involved. Program packages are available here on our website.
Don’t forget the different ways you can help us help the animals. If you are a big magazine subscriber, then your subscriptions or renewals can help us when you do so at www.magfundraising.com and purchase or renew your magazines at there. You will receive a big discount while helping Yogie and Friends. They give us a large percentage.
Also, when you shop online you can go to www.igive.org and sign up for Yogie to be your charity of choice and every time you visit one of the igive affiliates they will donate a percentage to Yogie and Friends.
You can also donate at www.networkforgood.org to help the cats.
Also, if you use www.goodsearch.com as another type of search engine and designate Yogie and Friends as your charity. We receive money for each legitimate search you make on this search engine. How easy is that?
Please remember to spay and neuter your pets. Also, do what you can to prevent flea and ticks causing serious illnesses to your animals. They deserve your care and kindness. Remember too that it is extremely hot out again. Please make sure you provide all your animals, inside and outside, fresh, clean, and cool water. Provide good shade shelter for those animals outside. NEVER leave your animals outside in the hot car. I don’t care how cool you may think it is the temperatures get dangerously high and they will die in a closed vehicle. Even when it is parked in the shade temperatures can rise to well over 100 degrees. Love your animals with your caring kindness.
Be good to your animals. Be good to people! Be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

March 2008 Sanctuary News
Greetings All!
Well it is March already and we will be opening for the season on April 5th if the weather permits. This is the time we prepare for that opening and hopefully a banner year of support for these magnificent animals.
As many of you may have seen on KTBS, Chris Redford did a story about one of our Siberian tigers, Pooh Bear. Pooh is over 16 years old and showing signs of old age. As is common with animals in the wild they begin to show a “wasting” of body mass. Typically in the wild these animals will go off to die alone. In captivity there is so much advance in medical technology, no common predators (other than humans), and better nutrition that these animals can live longer. Pooh Bear had a rough start, but the past several years he has enjoyed the best comforts we could provide him. Nothing compares to a natural living outside of captivity, but he has a good life with us. Blood tests don’t always show things that could cause an animal distress. So, one of our vets has placed him on an antibiotic regimen to rule out anything that could be causing his weight loss. He does have some arthritis in his back legs and he is on anti-inflammatory medicine to ease that. If Pooh Bear stops eating and drinking water, which he has not done, then we will look at the most humane thing for him. Until then, we continue to do the best for Pooh Bear and appreciate everyone’s prayers and support. We’ll continue to post updates on his progress.
We have several upcoming events scheduled:
Our semi-annual bake sale is scheduled at Courtyard Coffee on Youree Drive (next to Michael’s and Sam’s Club) on Saturday, March 15th from 11 A.M. – 4 P.M. Stop by, have a cup of coffee, and buy some really amazing baked good to support the cats. These keep getting better and better. We hope to see you there.
Wild Wing for the Wild Ones at Buffalo Wild Wings on Youree Drive in Shreveport on Wednesday, April 2nd from 11 A.M. – 1 A.M. Just take this coupon into Buffalo Wild Wings and they will donate 20% of the cost of the meal you purchased to Yogie and Friends. This applies to take out orders as well.
Belk’s Department Stores are holding another charity day on Saturday, May 3rd at all the Belk’s Department Stores. You can purchase a $5 raffle for a chance at winning a $1000 gift card.
The biggest need for any sanctuary, of course, is money. Since we are a 100% volunteer driven organization nobody here receives any compensation. All money donated goes to the care of the animals. You donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. There are several ways you can donate to Yogie and Friends and please feel confident that your donations are properly handled. We appreciate all your donations for these wonderful animals.
Volunteers of the Month: Our volunteers of the month are Jarret Snow, Glenn Hannis and Jeremy Louk. They have been working hard to get our education building up and running.
Yogie’s three cubs (BC, NC, and RC) will be celebrating their first birthday on 16 March 2008. Happy Birthday little ones!
If you are interested and able we could use your help with lawn care and other cleanup and prep work for our opening season and throughout the year. Just let us know. We can sure use volunteer help as well. Also things like fundraisers, car washes, you name it. If you have the skills we can use them. Please come and help us out.
Check out the programs being offered at Yogie and Friends. There is the Yogie and Friends Membership Program , Sponsorship Program, and Corporate Sponsorship Program . Sad news here for us. The Kroger share card program will be coming to an end this month. Kroger said they will no longer be doing the share card, but they will have a continuation of this type program in conjunction with the Kroger Plus Card. All you have to do is add Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice and they will donate 1% of what your grocery bill is to Yogie and Friends. This will save you a step and you won’t have to worry if you have the share card in your wallet. It will be one easy step now. We are still learning about this new method and will have information available to help you designate Yogie and Friends as your charity of choice. As soon as we get this info we will let you know. This is good in Louisiana and Texas.
Teddy Allen: What do you get a King who has everything?
From a Blog post at http://teddyallen.blogspot.com/
What do you get a King who has everything?
Remember the birth last year at Chimp Haven at this time, the one that was the result of a failed vasectomy?
The same thing (different species) happened a year earlier and resulted in the birth of Moses, whose digs are at Yogie and Friends, which as you might recall is a 100 percent volunteer driven organization. Nobody at Yogie gets paid for all the fine work they do.
Moses was two years old yesterday.
Happy Birthday Moses!
(I got him a wildebeest. Just happened to catch one on sale…)
