February 2024 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie Fans!

Well January brought us some very strange weather for Louisiana. We had extremely wintry weather for this state, one point we had a minus one wind chill, and a lot of ice. That shut things down for a week, and more in other areas. We were mostly concerned about the space heaters we use in the cat buildings being able to handle the temperatures. We made it and all the cats are well. Our feral colonies even did well with the more insulated shelters we made for them. One of our fans even bought us two Clawsable heated shelters and we are happy the ferals did use them. That makes us happy. We now have building repairs to get done.

We put a call out to our fans on Facebook that we needed to replace three of our heaters. The others were starting to fail. We have had them since 2012 and they did an excellent job. Our fans came through and we have three new, good working heaters. Thank you so much. We are expecting some more very cold, possibly snowy, weather around mid-February.

We are now looking to replace the window unit air conditioner in the building we have had since around 2004. We want to do this before we start experiencing 1000-degree temperatures. Yes, we know it does not get that hot, but it sure feels bad.

YOGIE BOOTH AT BARKUS AND MEOUX PET PARADE:  This Sunday, February 4th, is the annual Barkus and Meoux Pet Parade. Yogie and Friends will have their vendor booth at this event. The parade will roll on February 4th at the Louisiana Downs Casino and Racetrack in Bossier City. This is a free family and pet friendly event.
The Vendor Market will open at 11am – with animal group vendors and food trucks.
They will have two contests starting at 1pm – “Best of Broadway” Float decorating contest and a “Best of Broadway” Pet Costume Contest.
The actual parade will start at 2:00pm.

Yogie and Friends will have hats, tee shirts, and collectible ceramic items to raise funds for the Yogie and Friends cats.

If anyone would also like to help the Yogie and Friends cats with food and litter, this would be a good time to bring your donations to our booth and visit the Yogie and Friends volunteers. We are in desperate need of canned pate’ food, dry food, and scoopable cat litter. The only thing we request is the food NOT be grain free. Grain free food has been proven to cause serious heart issues in animals. The things we use most are Friskies Pate,’ Purina Cat Chow Complete, or Purina Naturals. Any scoopable cat litter works for us. We thank you in advance.

Hope to see you all there.

BUILDING REPAIRS: Our repairman came to Yogie to look at our original cat building that needs the floor repaired. We decided to remove one door on the side of the building, it was previously the gift shop, and one door was entrance and the other exit. We really do not need the two doors, so we decided to put the wall back up where the second door is now. That second door also has continuous leaking issues because the person who installed it did not properly do so. This will take care of that and let us have a better layout for the cats. The Director will paint the building after the wall is put up and then the floor repaired and vinyl planks will replace the old, damaged, laminate. This should freshen it up and be an even healthier environment.

Our director bought a five gallon can of paint for the old cat building in Frierson and she plans to begin painting next week. She is going to start on the higher parts now and get that going in advance of Vernon doing the repair work. This way she also will not have to be as worried about the floor if she has any splatters before the floor is repaired and the vinyl planks put in. She wants to get as much done as she can so it will be an easier finish.

ADDRESS CHANGE: A reminder that we have a new physical address for Yogie and Friends. It is now: Yogie and Friends, 140 Fob Lane, Frierson, LA 71027

We continue to need your help and there are a few ways you can do that. The following are the wish lists for supplies:

VET CARE: Snowball is doing well after his aural hematoma surgery. He has spent his recovery with our director at her house and has been a spoiled little boy, but we would not have it any other way. We currently have a small vet bill, but it is not like our normal bills.

Finn continues to have lung issues and after a visit to the vet it was decided to put him on an Albuterol inhaler. Dr. Daville has placed other cats on this treatment for the same issue with a great deal of success. The inhaler has arrived, and the director is going to start his treatment.

You can help in any of the following ways. Thank you!

KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS:  Attention Kroger Shoppers. Please consider helping our cats when you shop at Kroger. Our Kroger Community Rewards number is GD567, and you can find us by our name as well, Yogie and Friends FIV Positive Cat Sanctuary. When you log into your Kroger account you can select us as your charity of choice and a portion of your purchase will be donated to our rescue sanctuary. This is one of the easiest ways to help us financially when you go grocery shopping. It takes nothing out of your pockets either. How cool is that?

SPONSORSHIP We often speak of our sponsorship program and right now we are really trying hard to get all our cats sponsored. Sponsorship is a wonderful way to help support our cats. By sponsoring one of our Yogie cats, you will be providing food, limited medical care (we know that medical bills can get extremely high and do not expect a sponsor to cover it. Unless they can, and want to), and their basic care and support. 100% of the sponsorship goes to the care of these animals. If each cat had a regular, monthly, sponsor, it would help ease the financial burden of care for the animals we provide sanctuary for.

Please note that more than one person may sponsor a cat, but rest assured that all sponsored funds are used for the ongoing care of our cats.

You can sponsor a cat for just $15 a month, $45 a quarter, or $180 a year. You can always contribute more. It all helps a great deal.

If you choose to sponsor a cat via PayPal or Venmo, please let us know the name of the cat you would like to sponsor.

Happy New Year!

Another year has come and gone, and it seems like it has so quickly! We hope and pray you all had a safe, and wonderful holiday season.

THANK YOU:  There are so many people we want to thank. Of course, you, our awesome fans, who donate and make helping these cats possible. We know we could not do it without you!

We also want to say a special thank you to our webmasters, Damon, and Paige Bass, for creating and maintaining our website. They have been doing this for us for years and we cannot thank them enough for this kindness. It is much appreciated.

Our Christmas bake sale was an amazing success and we thank all who came out and bought goodies, our bakers, and our donors. We were so busy from setup till we shut down. We were not even able to put our merchandise out because we were nonstop from the start. We did it outside under our event tent and that was amazing. There is no way we can do that in the warmer months, but we loved this setup. Thank you all again!

VET CARE: We had two cats with ear infections, which we have no idea how they got them, but they did, and both cats developed hematomas from scratching. It does not seem to take much to cause those, but they often come back and can be difficult to deal with as a result. So far Snowball and Lucy are responding to treatment.

Lucia, our deaf cat with megacolon will be going in for a follow-up appointment and we hope the medications are doing their job.

Egon will also be going for a follow-up appointment to check his blood work. He is more than a year out from his Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) treatment, and he is doing very well.

Our plan is to also do some physicals of our more senior and geriatric cats. We have several and we want to be on top of things.

November 2023 Newsletter

Hello Yogie Fans!

November has arrived and we are finally experiencing some cooler weather. It’s going to get warm again, so we never really know what to expect. So, we just make sure the feral cat houses are clean and always have fresh straw. We give these cats a variety of shelter from the elements.

We have no events planned in November, but Jenny is working on a very cool raffle we hope to get going in plenty of time to draw at the Christmas bake sale. It’s just getting everything set.

We also have a unique plan for the Christmas bake sale if Petco will allow us to do it. More to come as soon as we get the go ahead on it. We will still have it on December 23rd though.

PAWS IN THE PARK:  Thank you for another successful Paws in the Park. We want to thank those of you who were able to come out and support the event. This is always an event we enjoy doing and we want to especially thank Realtors to the Rescue for hosting this event for the local rescues every year. We truly appreciate the kindness.

BUILDING REPAIRS:  We are still waiting for our building repairs to be done. With recent storm damage the repair people have been really backed up. We really like our guy because he does a good job and has been the fairest regarding labor costs. One quote for work in the large cat building was more than $2000 and our guy did the same work with materials for $900. His work is quality too, so we wait for him. It will be done soon though.

VET CARE:  Fabio, the little black kitten that showed up at the catio one very hot June day got neutered on October 30th. He did very well. There was a feral female kitten, Little Fuzz, that was finally trapped and spayed that same day. She is also doing well but is a very spicy feral. We still didn’t want to release her back to the colony the day after spaying with temperatures expected in the 20s and 30s, so she is in our two-story medical cage and after a week of healing we will release her back to her colony. Jenny tried to socialize her, but she’s just not having it. We really wanted to, but she does well in her colony.

We do have a small balance at our vet clinic, a little over $300, and an $81 balance at Robinson’s Rescue for the spay and neuter on the 30th. That is a very inexpensive spay and neuter.

FOOD AND LITTER: We don’t know why there is such a problem with cat food and litter, but a recent order we placed for five cases of Friskies Pate’ came in so damaged that only four cases were usable. It’s crazy how poorly this stuff was packaged and shipped. We always need your help with cat food and litter, and you can help with our wish lists.

These are our current wish lists. Food and litter are always a top priority. We continuously need help with these items.

October 2023 Newsletter

Hello Yogie Fans!

We want to thank you all for another successful bake sale. Despite the slow day and less item availability, we did well and know we couldn’t have without you.

ISABELLA:  We must report yet another loss. One of our former feral cats, Isabella, was found in the catio, looking like she was sleeping, but she was dead. We were a little surprised, but she looked so peaceful, and we couldn’t ask for a better way for one of the cats to go. We had no real idea how old she was. She has been with us about 10 years, but living her previous feral life, she may have been older. She was FIV+ and that became more of an issue when she recently got sick and didn’t have a strong enough immune system to fight. But we take comfort in knowing she had a good life with us, however short we always feel it is. We will miss Isabella.

PAWS IN THE PARK:  Paws in the Park will be held on Saturday, October 21st from 10:00 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Riverview Park Church (The Old Hamels) 3232 E. 70th Street, Shreveport, Louisiana. This is hosted by Realtors to the Rescue, and it is a really good time for people to come see adoptable pets, meet rescue groups, and just have fun. We hope you can make it.

During this year’s Paws in the Park, we would like to see if our fans would consider donating food and litter and dropping it by the event for our cats. It will also give us a chance to visit with our fans as well. You can look at the wish lists below to see what we can use.

BUILDING REPAIRS:  Recent storms, and just years of wear and tear, are taking a toll on our cat building on the Frierson property. Surprisingly ants can be just as destructive as termites, and we have some damage to our floor. Our air conditioning unit has also seen better days, it’s over 10 years old and works very hard. We would like to get the storm damage repaired, a new AC unit since they will be on sale now, and possibly do a decking style patio like we have in the Bossier houses. The decking makes it easier to treat fleas, clean off when a cat may occasionally vomit, and just overall look better and easier to maintain. We have a carpenter who has done amazing work for us, and he never charges a lot. Our Bossier houses need to have the plastic patio roofing replaced because the extreme summer heat and sun has made it so brittle it’s starting to break. We are going to replace those with metal. We are researching material costs and will start fundraising as soon as possible to get this all done. We feel fortunate we haven’t had to do much maintenance to our buildings up to this point.

VET CARE:  At this moment, thanks to some very special people, we don’t have a vet bill. We do have some follow-up medical tests coming up, but hopefully no major issues.

FOOD AND LITTER: We have been having a really difficult time getting canned cat food. We have no idea why this has been such a problem, but it has been. We normally get the Friskies Canned Pate’ at Sam’s Club because it was the best price for the box of 60, but the clubs have not had it in stock for over five months now. When the director goes to order it online, they limit it to five boxes per month. This is crazy. We have 62 cats, and this does not last. She spends more time running from store to store to find the food.

These are our current wish lists. Food and litter are always a top priority. We continuously need help with these items.

September 2023 Newsletter

Hello Yogie Fans!

Welcome to September. Now, let’s bring on some cooler weather so it FEELS like September!

Our Fall Bake sale is scheduled for September 23rd, Jenny’s shoulder injury from November was doing great, but now it looks like she will need surgery and she is limited in the use of her arm. If you would like to, and care, help contribute baked items to the bake sale we certainly would appreciate your help. Just let us know.

Olaf

Olaf

OLAF:  We are sad to report that our sweet, beautiful, Olaf, has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This was an unexpected thing. Our director had noticed he seemed a little “off.” Nothing obvious, but he just wasn’t himself. He was still eating and drinking, didn’t sound sick with anything like an upper respiratory infection of UTI. He just wasn’t his usual vocal, or cuddly, self. A Cat Scan revealed a tumor the size of Jenny’s fist in one of his lungs. It was wrapped around blood vessels near his aorta and diaphragm. On the way back to the sanctuary he had a seizure and Jenny, still close to the clinic, rushed him back. It was the most difficult decision to let him go because he looked so perfect and normal, but it was obvious that medically he was not. This cat comforted the Six Pack kittens when they arrived, he was one of the most beloved cat ambassadors for us and visitors just loved him. We love all our cats and will always do the best for them, but it is never easy. R.I.P. our sweet Olaf. You are truly missed.  2014 – 28 August 2023

LUCIA:  Lucia is our deaf cat that arrived at the sanctuary with a broken jaw. Over time we saw other signs she was most likely hit by a car and rolled. She aggressively attacks her own tail to the point she has had two minor amputations. Yet she still attacked it. Our director recently went to visit her family and when she returned, she noticed Lucia was growling, isolating, and just not acting normally. There were no visible signs of injury or illness, but she was obviously in some distress. When she was picked up to put in the kennel, she got very aggressive and a lot of blood started coming out near her tail, but we didn’t know where it was coming from, so she was rushed to the ER. She had attacked herself so much she had a very large abscess on the top of her tail. She also had a great deal of necrotic tissue. We didn’t know the extent of the infection, but she remained in the hospital for about 10 days and received laser therapy. Thankfully it did the job. We feared they were going to need to debride the area, which is terrible, but it was not necessary. The vet also said she has Megacolon and is on Lactulose and a special diet. Because she may have nerve damage, or behavioral issues that may be causing her to attack herself.  She has also been placed on Gabapentin. That seems to be helping and she will have a follow-up on the 22nd of September.

VET CARE:  With Olaf and Lucia’s recent medical issues, our vet bill was over $3000. Thanks to some great fans it is down to about $1300. The major illnesses make it hard to get a lot of preventative care for our geriatric population, but we are working on it. Any help with the vet bill is always appreciated and you can call a donation to the vet clinic directly at 318-747-5757.

FOOD AND LITTER:

These are our current wish lists. Food and litter are always a top priority. We continuously need help with these items.

Cash donations are even more important for us. Or you can donate using one of the following methods:

PayPal:  yogieandfriends@hotmail.com

Venmo: YogieCats

And as always, you can mail a check or money order to: Yogie and Friends, 128 Fob Lane, Frierson, LA 71027.

Welcome Yogie Fans!

We are fortunate with Yogie and Friends that, other than no power, there was no damage to the property and all humans and animals are well.

FOOD AND LITTER:

Our biggest issues now remain food and litter. We have no idea what the issue is with the canned cat food we buy. We try to keep our cats on canned pate’ because our vets say it is better than shreds and gravy that cats tend to just lick the juices, and they are higher in carbs. Currently, we feel that food is food, and they must eat. Also, our vets tell us to never use grain free food because of the heart problems arising in animals being fed a grain free diet.

We typically get our Friskies canned pate’ at Sam’s Club because the box of sixty cans was the best price. They have not had this available at the clubs here for more than two months.

If our fans would like to help us with cat food and litter, we have provided our links below.

These are our current wish lists. Food and litter are always a top priority.

July 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to July Yogie Fans!

We hope this newsletter finds you all safe and well. The storms we had a couple of weeks ago wreaked havoc on the Shreveport-Bossier area. This storm was not just in the northwest Louisiana area, but also did a great deal of damage in East Texas as well. The National Weather Service said it had been an EF-1 tornado and with the damage that was left behind we are grateful it was not worse. There were no storm related deaths, but sadly, there was a heat related death in Marshall, Texas of a Swepco lineman from West Virginia. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

More than 250,000 people were without power for as long as ten days. And these were some of our hottest days so far. Our director said she slept right through the storm. Not sure how considering the mess it left behind.

We are fortunate with Yogie and Friends that, other than no power, there was no damage to the property and all humans and animals are well.

June 2023 Newsletter

Greetings Yogie Fans!

June has arrived and it just seems like the months are flying by!

Another Give for Good campaign has come and gone, and we want to thank everyone who contributed, and/or shared, about this event. We don’t know the final tally yet but should soon. We think it is about $2500. We did win a $500 prize and we have never won a prize. That makes us happy. So, thank you again.

Yogie and Friends celebrated its 23rd Anniversary on May 26th. Thank you for making this possible.

LEE:  Our friends at Bossier City Animal Control were trying to find a rescue to help save a very sick adult cat. Lee was found roaming Benton Road in Bossier. He was emaciated and sickly. He had been neutered, declawed, and had a microchip. When BCAC contacted the address on the microchip, the people denied knowing the cat. We have our suspicions, but it does no good to go there. We could not take Lee because his condition warranted a home without any other animals that could possibly hurt him. Serendipity Pet Rescue decided to take him and our Director, Jenny, took him to her house to foster him. Lee had severe matting of his fur, so he was shaved to remove them. Mats are very painful and can cause sores. After Jenny picked him up from the vet, she saw just how terribly ill he really was. She kept him in her bathroom on a very soft blanket, he ate well, and we felt rested comfortably, what may have been the first time in a long time. Lee declined overnight and stopped eating and drinking. Sadly, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge on May 24th. This guy touched us all deeply. R.I.P. Lee.

FOOD AND LITTER:

We are having a difficult time finding canned cat food. We have no idea why there is such a shortage, but it has been crazy. We use Friskies Pate and Friskies Shreds. We usually get these at Sam’s Club because it’s the least expensive, but they have been out for over a month. We watch Sam’s app daily to see if it has come back in stock and buy as much as possible when it does. It’s very stressful.

Currently our bank account is very low. We have $968 in the account. This is very scary. We must buy cat food, litter, and have a vet balance of a little over $500 right now.

These are our current wish lists. Food and litter are always a top priority.

March 2023 Update

Greetings Yogie Fans!

Welcome March! It sure doesn’t feel like it. We need air conditioning already. Hope this is not a sign of a very hot summer!

Sasha

SASHA:  Our sweet Sasha crossed the rainbow bridge on February 1st. She was taken to the vet for what at first appeared to be a severe urinary tract infection. Her white blood count was so high it didn’t even register. Her red blood count was so low she required a blood transfusion. She had to be put under sedation to access a vein. She was a very sick girl, riddled with cancer, and we did not want her to suffer. She was a sweet, sweet, once feral, cat. She was a hard loss for us. R.I.P. Sasha.

SHARON DECARLO:  We are sad to share that one of the Shreveport-Bossier areas animal advocates died on February 25th as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident the previous week. Sharon DeCarlo was very well known in our area. She was a volunteer at Robinson’s Rescue Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Sharon would photograph all the animals after surgery on rescue day, then post them on the website and Facebook to get more notice for adoptions. She really loved animals. Sharon retired from Bossier Parish Community College where she taught math for several years. Sharon was a very kind lady who will be missed by so many.

VET ISSUES:  On February 9th Draco, Eragon, and Flynn were neutered. They are all doing very well. Now, we want to trap, spay/neuter, return (TNR), nine feral cats and kittens we have seen between our Bossier, and Frierson, location. It is a never-ending battle to keep these colonies fixed because of dumped and abandoned cats and kittens.

GEEK’D CON:  We are sorry to announce we had to pull out of the Geek’d Con event this year. Our Director had an injury back in November that now requires surgery. She is holding off till after the bake sale, but the doctor said she cannot do things the things that doing an event like this requires, so we pulled out. Everything will be fine, but this involves at least four to six months physical therapy and recovery. Thank you for understanding.

FOOD AND LITTER:  The need here is constant. You can always help with our Amazon, or Chewy, wish lists. Chewy tends to cost less than Amazon.

We buy Royal Canin Urinary S/O, at $99.99 a 17.6-pound bag. Royal Canin Ultamino at $63.99 a 5.5-pound bag. These are all prescription diets, but they are working as they should, so in the long run prescription food versus vet bills. This does not include tax. Being a non-profit does not mean we do not have to pay sales tax.

We have been part of the Kroger Community Rewards program for well over 15 years, but they made some changes to their program, and we want to update our fans who happen to shop at Kroger Grocery Stores. Our Kroger Community Rewards number is now GD567, and you can find us by our name as well, Yogie and Friends FIV Positive Cat Sanctuary. When you log into your Kroger account you can select us as your charity of choice and a portion of your purchase will be donated to our rescue sanctuary. This is one of the easiest ways to help us financially when you go grocery shopping. It takes nothing out of your pockets either. How cool is that?

Please consider helping our cats when you shop at Kroger. We deeply appreciate your help.

SPONSORSHIP:  We often speak of our sponsorship program and right now we are really trying hard to get all our cats sponsored.

WE CURRENTLY CARE FOR 66 CATS, as well as several feral.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Your donations are the most important thing to help us with our animals. We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit, in good standing. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We can really use help with funds to buy food, veterinarian care, and everyday care of the wellbeing of the animals. Thank you for your support.

We are spending about $5000 a month on food and litter alone. Then we have vet bills and other incidentals that come up creating an immediate need.
